A chunky ground bird with a brown body, and black-and-white head pattern (the head pattern is brown and tan on the female). Length: 20-25 cm.; weight: 170 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Native to eastern North America and Mexico. This species is rare in Puerto Rico where it has been introduced, but has not become well established. One recent location is at Susúa state forest.
