A reddish-brown marsh bird with very long toes, adapted for walking on floating vegetation. Length: 21-24 cm.; weight: males 91 g., females 161 g. Breeds from southern Texas through Central America, and on Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola. Sex roles are reversed in this species: the males do most of the incubating and care of the young; the larger female defends 1-4 males, each on his separate sub-territory. Accidental in wetlands on Puerto Rico in the 19th Century.
