White wingbars and yellow undersides and "spectacles" distinguish this slow moving vireo. Length: 13-15 cm.; weight: 15-21 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Breeds in the forests of eastern North America. Winters from southern Mexico to western Venezuela, and on Cuba, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands. Rare visitor in coastal areas, wetlands, and woodlands in Puerto Rico, but has been reported more frequently in recent years (e.g. Vieques, 18 Dec. 1984 and 25 October 1998; Los Tres Picachos State Forest, 15 January 1998; Camablache State Forest, 22 December 2001; Aguirre, 1992; annually in Ciales, 1996-2001and El Yunque). Because it is hard to see in dense vegetation, it may be more common than believed.

TAXONOMY: PASSERIFORMES; VIREONIDAE
