Pato de plumaje marrón grisáceo con una mancha blanca en las alas visible al volar y mientras nada. El pico es oscuro (amarillo o gris claro en otros patos afines). Tamaño: 46-58 cm.; peso: 850-990 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Anida en el centro de América del Norte y Eurasia, típicamente invernando en el sur de América del Norte, las Bahamas y Cuba.
