Will I Need to Change My Sun Application Software?

If your Sun application is driven by the left mouse button, NO changes are necessary. Since our touch drivers convert touch events into mouse-like events at the server mouse handler level, there is absolutely no need to change your application software. In most instances, you may use both the touchscreen and the mouse.

There are cases of (e.g. kernel-based drivers) where the user must choose between the mouse or the touchscreen. Both cannot be supported where these kernel-based drivers are required (mostly with SunOS drivers). The kernel-based driver also requires the user to remake the kernel of the OS during touchscreen driver installation.

If your software application uses the center and right mouse buttons as well as the left mouse button, you will need to determine ways that multiple button use can be done with touch. Contact Bob Klunder at Trident Systems for suggestions. He has several methods that work.

Touch screen users are advised to be aware of the size touch target areas presented on the CRT display. Many times, a target sufficient in size for a mouse click will be a bit small for a finger click. While not absolutely necessary, users of touch software displays generally increase the size of touch targets (e.g. 1/2" square for buttons & sliders).

If you have questios on touch display development and/or human factor issues relating to touch display development, contact Pete Snyder or Andy Strasser at Trident Systems.
