Controllers are plug-ins that handle all of the animation tasks in 3D Studio MAX, including:
Float Controllers: use floating point values.
Point3 Controllers: a general purpose, three-component data type.
Position Controllers: controls for position.
Rotation Controllers: controls for rotation.
Scale Controllers: controls for scale.
Transform Controllers: controls for position, rotation and scale
Most parameters don't receive a controller until you animate them. As soon as you change a parameter with the Animate button on, or click in its track using Track View Add Keys, a default controller is assigned to the parameter.
You are not required to keep the default controller for any parameter. 3DS MAX has many available controllers that you can choose at any time. You can change the controller assigned to a parameter and even specify the default controller to use in the future.
You can assign controllers in Track View and in the Motion Panel.
For a list of available controllers see Assign Controller (Track View) .
