14th May 2000

- ACUP status update: To implement the PPC rendering code, it was necessary
to utilise a new compiler system; The V5.17 ACUP (68k) release was produced with this new compiler,
but unfortunately a number of problems showed up with the generated code (hence the release of the
V5.17 patch, and the V5.17a update).
During the wait for an update to the compiler, work continued with PPC rendering support. The results
of the work so far has been issued to the beta-testers; On the systems where the code worked as
anticipated, a significant speed increase was gained with the PPC over the same test with a 50Mhz 060.
Unfortunately, due to the problems which appear when compiling Imagine with this system, a backup
solution of using an alternative PPC compiler is in the process of being implemented.
Since extra work has to be done to get Imagine tested and running under the alternative compiler,
the public release of the V5.18 ACUP update will have to be pushed back a bit.
More information will be posted here, and to the Imagine Mailing List, as the steps to the next
ACUP release are completed.
