Let Tux Work in Your Hands
von Oliver Fels
InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH

Oliver Fels holds a degree in technical computer sciences. Since his graduation years ago, he has been interested in using open technologies for private and business purposes. He is currently working as a project manager and consultat for InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH in Eriskirch, Lake Constance, where he is responsible for working out concepts for mobile appliance technologies. He has a long time experience in software development with object oriented technologies and JAVA under Linux.

Whenever people talk about PDAs and mobile devices, they think of Microsoft's PocketPC/WinCE and Palm computers. Mobile computing is usually associated with the notion of carrying a Palm or PPC in your pocket to synchronize addresses or read your mail when you are away from the office.

But there is one aspect of mobile devices that is consistently ignored: Small computers can simplify day-to-day working procedures in all areas of industrial and commercial businesses. Whenever access to vital information from different points of the working area is needed, a mobile device makes life easier, providing greater efficiency and saving time and costs.

This session is intended to show aspects of mobile computing using Linux-based mobile appliances. It will provide information as to why and when a Linux-based PDA is superior to Microsoft or Palm based devices, and what distributions and devices are available. A practical demonstration of a real life prototype application will be shown to illustrate the capabilities of industrial applications, and to show how Tux in your hands can support the "distributed working" paradigm.

Note: The session presentation will be partially run from a Linux driven iPAQ.
