Factoid Marine scientists have analyzed less than five percent of all known plant species as potential medicines. Yet plant chemicals, as a major or sole ingredient, make up 38 percent of all prescriptions written annually in the United States. Many compounds discovered in nature can then be synthesized for commercial production.
