completely written in Greek, I don't understand a word, but the graphics alone are worth a visit :-). (ps)

Fast 3D gfx chip by nVidia
Heise writes, among other:
California gfx chip manufacturer nVidia presented the 3D chip for
PC graphic gards previously dubbed "NV10" in Berlin. The GeForce 256
is the first graphic chip for consumer PCs that processes and displays 3D data mainly on its own.
With 23 million transistors, the GeForce 256 is more than twice as complex as a Pentium-III CPU
(9 million transistors). Since it does geometry transformations and lighting calculations much faster than
the PC CPU, it can create 3D objects and 3D virtual realities with much more detail and fluid moves. Thus,
PC games can make use of curved and organic structures like in movies a la "Toy Story" and "A Bug's Life".

Seybold Conference: First Macs with PowerPC G4 CPU
MacGadget, among others, writes:
As expected, Apple CEO Steve Jobs presented a new generation of Macintosh computers in his keynote
to the Seybold Conference in San Francisco, which are powered for the first time by the top-performing
PowerPC G4 CPU. Apple called the new Macs "supercomputers", offering significantly more speed than
the current Power Macintosh G3 product line. Apple starts shipping the first 400 MHz G4 system today.
Versions with 450 and 500 MHz are bound to follow in the next two weeks.
The main performance specs are a 2x AGP bus, integrated AirPort technology, an Ultra 66
ATA system and an accelerated PCI bus. Jobs spend special attention on the AltiVec technology.
This especially speeds up operations heavy on numerical calculations, like graphic applications.
A special AltiVec-optimised expansion to Photoshop is included with every G4 Mac. The new systems
will cost between 1599 and 3499 USD. A PowerPC G4 with 500 MHz is said to be much faster than a
Pentium III with 600 MHz. The Power Macintosh G4 will be shipped in the same casing as the current
G3 line, but not in blue-white but silver-white.
The new configurations in overview:
Power Mac G4/400, 64 MB memory, 10 GByte-HD, 32speed CD-ROM; 1599 $
Power Mac G4/450, 128 MB memory, 20 GByte-HD, DVD-ROM; 2499 $
Power Mac G4/500, 256 MB memory, 27 GByte-HD, DVD-RAM; 3499 $

DOS, Windows 3.x, 95 and NT. At first, Hyperion considered developing an own video

by Monolith make use of Smacker, it was decided to save developing time and purchase the
license for the port, since Smacker is really fast and efficient when used with only 256

Hotmail cracked completely
FutureZone writes:
Mail of every user readable | no password needed | details unknown so far | FutureZone has tested Exploit
The free mail service Hotmail has been cracked heavily today. With a web form it is possible
to read any user's mail - without password. FutureZone has a corresponding link, first tests
revealed: Every Hotmail account is readable. (Full article - German - at the title link.)
August 31st, 1999:
Heise writes, among others: Hotmail
hole fixed for now About twelve hours after the Hotmail hack became public, Microsoft
reported the bug has been fixed. In the meantime, the Hotmail server was offline. Our editors
however recieved messages until late in the night that readers were able to scan Hotmail
accounts without the need for a password. After the Microsoft announcement at 2:00 AM
local time, this seems to be impossible. Microsoft has not yet commented about the technical
background making the attack possibe.
Spiegel Netzwelt, among others, writes:
Hacker group claims
responsibility for Hotmail hack According to informations of the online news service
"Wired", a so far unknown hacker group claimed responsibility for the move on Monday. The
online magazine cites a Swedish spokesman that is reported to have made contact with "Wired".
According to him, the group named "Hackers Unite" consists of a Swedish and seven US-Americans.
The hackers made the backdoor public to bring attention to the insufficient security of
Microsoft's products: "We didn't make this hack to destroy, but to show the world how
bad the security really is at Microsoft, and that the company nearly has a monopoly on
computer software", a 21-year-old group member is cited.

FMRecord/FMRecordDec and FMRecorder.
FMRecorder makes it possible to comfortably record videos with the FrameMachine.

FusionPPC: Only 380 of the needed 500 preorders recieved
Thomas Lorenz writes:
There are still many preorders missing. Here the latest news from the Fusion mailinglist:
From: Jim Drew msdei@ctaz.com Subject: [FUSION]: PPC upgrade status
This is an official announcement from Microcode Solutions...
As many of you know, Microcode Solutions has been trying to establish a base market for its new
emulations. We presented the public with a test marketting idea of pre-paying for a PowerPC emulation. We
reached our base goal of 500 units (actually we reached nearly 700), and then we announced that we were
now accepting the pre-payments. To date we have only 380 pre-payments (none of which have been
processed), meaning that we are still short 120 units before we can commit to producing this product.
It has been several months since we have been collecting actual pre-payments. We are spending an
incredible amount of time and resources on this project (which is 1/1000th the revenue of our PC market),
and we hope that we are not wasting our time by doing so. We ask that if you have not placed your order
yet, please do so now. If we do not reach the 500 unit goal, we will not release the product, no matter how
much we have completed so far... we will use some of the work for our PC version. x

Update GeoWorld
After more than half a year of work, today we finally finished the long-awaited update to
version 1.1 of GeoWorld. GeoWorld, probably the best geographical software for the Amiga,
has been expanded by the following features in version 1.1:
- adding a new generic search function in the maxi search, enabling for the first time the
search for special keywords in the additional databases like economy, history etc. (full text
search)
- complete rework and bugfixes - NewLook-Menus for OS 3.0+ (no more changing menu colors)
- flashing pointer for cities and small countries now working correctly
- scrolling of the maps pixel by pixel per keyboard
- sorting speed-up due to presorted databases
- faster search functions (in Assembler)
- VisualPrefs now supported nearly completely
- GeoWorld-Fonts can now stay in the same directory
- interaction with all requesters now completely by keyboard
- option to give distances in miles instead of kilometers
- requester "no information available" now with configurable time-out
- reworked and expanded prefs window (among others display mode, font,
use, save or reset prefs)
- expansion of the city database for Austria, Switzerland, Brasil and US
cities (over 1100 cities with ZUP code, 6119 cities total)
- expanding the city databases with details about country / state capitals
- expanding the country databases with details about the Internet abbreviation (e.g. .de, .uk, .us)
- informations about the databases are now kept in a seperate GeoWorld.data file,
so an expansion of the databases does no longer imply a change of the main program
- expansion of the info requester
- rewritten and expanded online help
- reworked and extremly expanded data about the inhabitants of the countries (over 100 kByte
text!!) The Update Nr. 9 and a up-to-date demo version are available from our
homepage (title link), and should appear on Aminet (misc/edu) in the next few days.

Iwin: product specifications of A510MP and A1010MP online
At AmiUpdate, the entry in the
Sun Dealer Catalog is considered sufficient proof for the existence of Iwin. Here's the
entry.
At Antec. 2.
Jeffrey D. Webster explains in a posting
to c.s.a.m. why it isn't that hard to get added to the Sun Dealer Catalog.
Comment about the technical specification: It reads all too well. You cannot run the
bus system with a 68060-50, however. You will never get the speed to the PCI bus to transport
the data fast enough for the pixel rates of the gfx card. Not to speak of AGP. I consider
that impossible with a 68060 CPU. A company without Amiga experience can never implement
this stuff. For this, the subject is far too complicated. And how is all this intended
to run without Amiga chipset?
Thomas Raukamp writes: About your
comment about bus speed - don't forget that the Milan
is running gfx cards on the PCI bus with 060, so it is possible. Far less likely is that
the emulation of the Custom Chips is possible without modification of the Kick-ROMs. If they
modify them, they break the licence since they have none. With this, Iwin would end in court.

Statement about the current status of the warpTrans project by WARP9
Full text translator for English-German, German-English (details at the title link).
Since January 1999, a team based in Netherlands is working on the program.
Based upon a already finished dictionary the implementation has been possible at all.
The language recognition is almost finished, and is unique so far on the Amiga in its
high quality. An integration of this system into other applications is also possible.
To bring the warpTrans project to a final version, the time until November should
suffice.
Despite announcements, feedback of interested users has been sparse. While
everybody is calling for new, innovative software... One ought to think that such a
program deserved more attention. This does not seem to be the case. It seems like
everything is already there and no one needs something new? (Full text - German - at

Marc Albrecht writes:
Just for your information: 1998 and 1999, we (A.C.T. and ETERNITY) have officially
offered OPERA to make the port of the Amiga version on our own - for payment as well
as without payment for royalities. We were informed the Amiga port was underway, and
therefore they had no need for our services.
With other words: Forget about Opera - it will never come.

geeknews: Q & A with Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner
Q: Will we see a project from Opera to support the upcoming AmigaOS?
A: We will have to wait and see. At this time we do not know what will happen
with the new Amiga and what it really means. I have had my share of Amigas in
the past and I still have a couple at home so I would love to see the Amiga
prosper. At this time, however, we do not know what is going to happen. There
have been a lot of announcements without results from Amiga Inc. and we are
still waiting to see real results. If they deliver we will consider a port.
geeknews has not forgotten to ask about an Amiga version of Opera. As before,
the situation is such that there is no development taking place.

Iwin-Corp. |
Iwin announces new computers based on Amiga
On the website, two new Amiga-based computers are announced. For one the A510, which is planned as
a workstation with Motorola 68k (M-version) or PowerPC (P-version) CPU. The other is the A1010,
with special CPUs for Java and multimedia applications added.
More links on the subject: The Register
and AmiUpdate interview with Martin Steinbach.
Since the Iwin-Corporation (? I win?) is completely unknown to us so far, we did some research on
our own. The domain iwin-corp.com has been registered on June 21st, 1999, by Martin Steinbach,
85375 Neufahrn, Germany. The given phone number is a mobile. The phone register does list neither
a Mr. Martin Steinbach nor a company called Iwin-Corporation. The Iwin-Corporation is not registered
as a licensee by Amiga. The software named is non-existant. The trademarks A510 and A1010 do already
exist. Due to this, we think this website is a fake.

Thomas Wölflick writes:
I have found an interesting article in "Be Magazine" at www.bemagazine.com/articles/beos-4.5.html
(title link). There, Jason Kroll writes about the BeOS Release 4.5 in whole, its chances and
future. Especially interesting was the honorable mention of Amiga in the paragraph before the
last one. Here, he writes:
..."One impediment to development, and to users switching to BeOS, is that we don't know for sure
how secure the future will be. For one thing, Amiga, supported by Gateway, is probably in cahoots
with Transmeta, and based on the free Linux kernel, is about to make a monster reappearance,
supposedly based on technologies we have never seen in home computers. How will BeOS fare against
competition from the rebirth of the original multimedia machine?"...
Preliminary congratulations, fear of an undead, or how would you call it?

IBM Opens PowerPC Design to Apple Rivals
Yves Crevecoeur found on MacWeek this news brief that discusses IBM's action to open the PowerPC
platform. These machines will not run MacOS, however they will run Linux PowerPC and, we hope one day,
BeOS. This newly opened design with a 450Mhz G3 (aka. PowerPC 750) was shown in the IBM booth at Linux
World Expo. Systems using this design should begin shipping in Q1 2000 at earliest, no OEMs have (of
yet) jumped on board the PowerPC Bandwagon says IBM. -snip-
This sounds quite like the Pios One, doesn't it? It would be interesting for sure to see the P5-QNX
running on this box, with boot menu for Linux and BeOS :-)

amiga-news.de celebrates 1st anniversary
We have grown up and learned running. Yes, parents among you will know that babies usually
learn running with 13-14 months, but we are of the quick type :-). Meanwhile amiga-news.de
consists of a team of nine, all of
which are working on the news enthusiastically and with fun. We have learned much this year,
some ideas are implemented, others are waiting under the desk. Until we get "adult", there
will surely be many news coming your way, in both meanings of the word.
For the statisticans among you, some data:
On August 13th, 1998, the first news was posted: "CU Amiga Magazine cancelled". Back then
we had a great 200 readers per month. September 98 they were 1000, October 98 1800, November
98 2700, in December 98 5400, January 99 11,000, February 99 16,500, in March 99 even 23,900,
in April 99 again a great increase to 31,900, in May 99 36,800, in June 99 37,200, in July
99 47,000, and this month we will surely reach 50,000 readers :-) We are very excited about
this success, and will keep pressing it.
On this opportunity, we want to say a global thank you to all who contributed to
this site one way or another. Special thanks goes to all the other news services; without them,
collecting the news would be much harder. We are also very thankful to all the attentive
Amiga users and developers supplying us with news by eMail.
We would be very happy about birthday greetings in our
guestbook :-).

New Play16 (Eclipse Edition)
Thomas Wenzel writes:
While porting my audio software to 24-bit, the first thing to do was the ages-since-last-updated
Play16. The new version 1.9, which has been completed yesterday, can now process 24-bit AIFF data.
The playback, however, is still 16-bit. Next is an AHI-Record and AmigaAMP, and of course the AHI
driver for the Prelude. As soon as the digital interface is available, the full resolution can
be used with the appropriate equipment (external 24-bit converter). Play16 is available from play16.amiga.software.com
(title link), and soon from Aminet. Aside from the expanded AIFF support, nothing much has changed
however. There are more detailed error reports if you try to play back unsupported formats or
compressions, and that's it. Please don't bombard me with eMails, what else weird features I should
be implementing, I have no time for it :) I consider the project closed, and do only detail refining.

Amiga getting more and more media coverage
Heiko Krappmann writes:
In the issue of PC-Praxis before the last one, there has been an article about AmigaOS 3.5. The report
was about technical details and the release date. The MCC was mentioned briefly, too.
The latest issue of the PC-Joker printed a small article about our Amiga, too, sounding like this:
"Did you already know that Amiga is to release a new computer with Linux, appearing this year?"
At Giga, Michael Labiner stated once that they would possibly switch to Amiga if there would be
enough games to fill an issue. The video is available from PC-Joker, issue 7/99, MPEG format.
Also many VIPs are "coming out" as Amiga fans, like Oliver Kahn (German soccer pro) at Giga. He said
he had an Amiga once, and is missing it :-).
Rudi Rager writes:
In the August issue of the P.M. magazine, our Amiga is mentioned twice in the scope of a raytracing
special. Quote: "Oberland Computer now offers the made-in-Germany monzoom 3d for Windows,
originally developed for the legendary Amiga computer." Further down the text, it reads: "One of the
dream applications for pros, Cinema4D, developed by Maxon Computer also originally for the Amiga, is
now available as an entry version."
The article starts on page 88, the Amiga is mentioned p.90f. Speaking for myself, I am
very happy about little things like this :-).
Dirk Baeyens found the following article from ZDNet.com: Gateway to bring back Amiga.
More articles can be found on the Linux Special Page, where we collected all interesting articles
about AMigaNG/Linux/QNX sorted chronologically (Wall Street Journal, ZDNet.com, ZDNet.de, FutureZone,
Computerwoche etc.).

Sarcastically, clickBOOM adds that now everybody knows what Urban is doing when the

CV64/3D, Luke Stowe and Daniel Platt. Congratulations.

Heise: Hackermeeting hacked?
From the Heise article about the Chaos Communication Camp by the CCC:
The ports of the camp systems connected to the network have been scanned far and wide
since Friday evening, to find the weak spot in the "enemy" system. The organisers had
warned all "green" users to do Telnet sessions with encryption only, to make life not
too easy for the password sniffers. But about 6:30 PM, the catastrophy happened: the
systems suddenly denied any exchange of data with each other or internet. The Network
Operation Center (NOC) at the campsite surrendered and issued a "Red Alert". Even in
the early morning of Saturday, the NOC was still offline.

Today I, raster, nettwerk, kainx, and chris dibona went over to amiga to have a little chat with Allen
Havemose (VP of Engineering) and Richard Lipes (Director, Multimedia Services) of Amiga. We talked about
a few interesting things. I promised I wouldn't say too much about what they told me on my web site, but
they might be holding a couple of tricks up their sleeve yet. I also got to leave with a bunch of Amiga
paraphanalia - which in and of itself is kinda cool. I don't know what all I can talk about q uite yet,
but I'll find out. They were pretty impressed with enlightenment, which is cool - but we did make sure
they realized it IS only beta (at best) code and we're not anywhere near done with it yet. We'll see
where this goes from here. But I'm pretty excited about maybe working with them on a few things.

Foundation |
Foundation News
Two Foundation products have been announced for this year. First there ll be "Foundation: Directors Cut"
which is a re-release of the original Foundation, containing version 1.25, supporting graphics cards,
gouraud shading and more special effects. Regarding the very low price (14.99) of the re-release this
is the chance for everyone who "forgot" to buy this game til now.
The second one will be "Foundation Edge", which is Foundation, completely rewritten in portable
C++ (which could mean a PPC version of Foundation) and a totally different interface. The
Foundation's Edge Homepage is already
online. More information will be available there by the end of the week.
Update News:
In the next days a new update will be released. Paul Burkey is working on version 1.25, which will
be included on the CD "Foundation: Directors Cut". The support for Foundation and FoundationDC will
be continued.
Paul Burkey answered to an eMail:
>I read with much pleasure, that the development of
> Foundation will go ahead :-). And I am just curios
> for the new Foundations Edge and I will certainly
> buy it.
Great! You will certainly not have to wait quite so long for this new game to arive! You'll be playing
it for christmas!
> One thing is not clear for me: Have I to buy the
> promised updated or is it free for owners of the
> Foundation-CD? Please answer asap, because I want
> to explain it in the german Amiga News.
The re-release CD, "Foundation: Directors Cut" will be released as soon as possible. I'm currently
compiling the CD myself. It will contain the original game but with the next update (V1.25) already
installed. If you already have the original Foundation CD then you can download the update from the
Foundation Homepage or possibly fond it on a PD disk or cover of a Magazine. However the price of
"Foundation: Directors Cut" will be much cheaper than the original Foundation (Probably 50 DM) so for
anyone who doesn`t yet have Foundation, this is an ideal chance to get it.
Foundation's Edge will be a whole new game. More details of both products will be made available in the
next week. Also, you might like to know that Foundation is now published by Epic Marketing (Islona).
This will be announced in the next few days but you are free to publish that information if you wish.

Amiga in K1 Reportage (German TV)
Robert Wahnsiedler writes:
Yesterday, about 1:00 AM, I stumbled across a repeat of "K1 - Die Reportage", and
what did my tired eyes see in a report - an Amiga 4000. :) -.
It was about payment on internet by credit card, and how easy it is being cheated.
They showed an interview with Evrim Serim (sp?), a long-standing Amiga user and
co-author of the book Hackerland. It was briefly shown how easy it is for a "pro"
to hack into a simple site, and read out the credit card data. The interview was
made in his room, where he sat in front of an Amiga 4000, which was easily recognized
by keyboard and desktop. :) The screen was not that much visible, but the great Boing
ball sticking to the monitor :). Great advertising for insiders... :).

1) Rainboot 2.65 released:
On the Airsoft Softwair website, a new version of the famous multimedia
bootup Rainboot has just been released. For the first time, the new version
offers support for multiple background pics and other new features / improvements.
2) An original Windows98 Bootup for Amiga?
That's possible now, of course simulated only :-) At the Airsoft Softwair website,
the WindowsSimulator Bootconfig for Rainboot has been released. This looks almost 100%
like the Windows98 original (start screen, cycle, desktop, icons, taskbar, sounds).
A Windows98 startup is faked, leading to a rare Exception suggesting to rather use
AmigaOS. The bootup is great for impressing PC friends, at least it worked for me.
Rainboot 2.65 is required, since new features of this version are used.

Jim Collas in c.s.a.m.: Re: Let's have a little more FAITH!
In this posting, Jim Collas does speak earnestly about the reactions of
the Amiga community to his way of managing Amiga. Required reading, IMHO.

VWP: Virtual News
Michael Pfeiffer writes:
Temporary result: AmigaNG survey
The survey on the subject AmigaNG has a temporary result. The new Amiga might -
at least among the users already possessing an Amiga - become a full success.
Over 64% of all users want to buy the new powerhorse directly when available or
within 3 months. Those who have probably been set back by the Linux announcement
and do no longer want to own an Amiga are a minority of under 5%. The survey,
which gives important information to VWP for their future software development,
is continuing (link above).
New: Browser hit list
The VWP homepage now collects statistical data on the browsers used. This statistic
is different from others in that it recognizes browsers spoofing as Mozilla (like
AWeb, Voyager and MSIE). So, there is a hitlist available offering a real insight
in market shares and usage of browsers in the Amiga szene. This hitlist can be
found at the link above, under "statistics".
New: WaveTracer DS & AudioForum
The VWP homepage now offers a special forum
for the WaveTracer DS and related Audio questions. Here, you can state questions,
post hints, give tips and state your POV. This forum should prove being a quick
help with problems related to WaveTracer.

New akDatatype: akNAIL
Andreas R. Kleinert writes:
I have uploaded a new datatype to Aminet, called akNAIL. Since it is a "special
manufactured" datatype for IFX thumbnail files with .info extension, it was released
as Shareware. Registering by RegNet is only possible bundled with the other three
datatypes - other than this, there are the usual bundle offers.
