About Animanga - Anime and Manga Services
Animanga is a non-commercial, non-profit server run mostly by
myself, Yann Stettler. Our goal is to provide as much
information and data concerning anime and manga as well as
offering various services for the fans.
We are owning our own computers, domains, network address and
Internet connection via a leased line.
The money for all this is coming mostly from my salary and
from the few customers hosted by CohProg SàRL.
Why "animanga.com" and not "animanga.org" ? Because we think
that it's easier to remember :) Why not "animanga.ch", after
all we are located in Switzerland ? Be serious ! I already
told you a ".org" was harder to remember so a ".ch"... :)
All began more or less in 1992 when I started running a
multi-user role-playing game (MUD) on my university (EPFL or
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne) computers.
When I left the EPFL in June 94, I was forced to find a new
host to keep running the game. At that time, there was only
two backbone providers in Switzerland and three providers in
all. (Two of them being the backbone ones :). Naturally, none
of them were located in the same part of the country as the
one I am living in ! I finally managed to get a deal with the
third provider, TheNet - Internet Services AG and hosted a
computer in their building. This may well have been one of the
first, if not the first, private server of Switzerland !
In June 95, I created CohProg SàRL with a friend and in
December we opened a POP (Point Of Presence) for my provider
in Lausanne, the city where I live. That let us bring back our
computer to Lausanne and access it via a leased line instead
of paying unbelievable amounts to the Telecom. At that time we
got our network class C address and we registered the domain
"cohprog.com". (If you don't believe me, do a "whois
cohprog.com" :).
Ah! Yes ! One little more thing happened then : somewhen near
the end of 95, my provider asked me if I would like to work for
them and I accepted :)
My story with manga and anime goes back to around this period,
when we started creating a web site for the book-shop Glénat.
But the anime part of the server was really created in
February 96 when I decided to give another "look" to Glénat's
pages. As the book-shop also had manga and some anime, I
created some pages on those topics. Finally, in
August 96, I registered the domain "animanga.com".
- We are hosting for free anime/manga related home page with the
following condition :
- The pages need to be non-commercial
- They shouldn't contain any illegal data
- We are running several mailing-lists. If you want to create a
new one, contact me but I will probably only accept new lists
if they are related to anime/manga. Also, they shouldn't
duplicate an existing list.
- I wrote my own webring software for the "Anime Cels" ring and
I may be persuaded to create new one. Contact me !
- We provide a web to news gateway for anime and manga related
news groups in the main hierarchy or under the "fr" hierarchy.
- We can provide primary and secondary DNS for related domains.
- We are also running a secure (SSL) server.
- Other ? Ask and perhaps we can do something together...
My name is Yann Stettler (I guess that you already saw it at
the bottom of some pages :). I am 27 years old (or was in
1997) and I am working for TheNet - Internet Services AG, an
Internet access provider and consulting company, as a full
time system and network engineer.
If you want to see samples of my work, you can take a look at
the sources of the NexusMUD or at the latest CyberRoad Maps
report written for the EEMA (European Electronic Messaging
Association). I am also the author of the bandwidth management
and limitation module for Apache as well as various other
things, including the database software used on this web site
to create threaded guestbook, webring, auction, shopping
basket...
My hobbies include computer science, reading (mostly science-
fiction and fantasy), astronomy, role-playing game (but I
don't have the time any more) and anime (as a side effect :).
I don't believe it ! I actually nearly did a personal home
page ! -shiver-
Currently we have three main computers running Linux and a
couple of other one not open to public. We are connected to
the Internet via a permanent leased line (which cost a hell in
Switzerland) and we generate more than 15GB of traffic per
month (for 1.5 millions documents served).
CohProg web server is a heavily patched and modified CERN3.0A
daemon. The one for Animanga is currently an Apache 1.2+
daemon using my bandwidth management module. We are also
running an Apache server with SSL.

not ? :)
Still reading this ? I wouldn't have think that you would bear
with me so long... Well, enjoy the site and let me know what you
think of it !
PS : Ah! I just noticed that I didn't say anything about our logo :
The girl siting on Animanga's letters is a painting of Lemnear that was done
by my friend François Messere. The original has a size around A3. Here is
a larger scan (that doesn't show the quality of the original I fear...) :
