3.3 Understanding the Menus

3.31 The Microdot Menu

Check for new mail logs onto your selected POP3 mailbox (you can select a user and download from more than one mailbox) and collects any mail available.

A GUI will then appear which will show the transfer of mail into your account. Microdot-II will delete all mail on the server if you set this option within the settings.

Check for new news logs onto your news server and collects news for any newsgroups you have subscribe to. A GUI will appear and monitor the collection of news which is similar to the mail transfer GUI as shown above. If you have any newsgroups which (currently) have no news messages you will be presented with a GUI which asks whether you want to download "all articles" or the "last 100" - last 100 is recommended or transfer will take a long time!

You will now be presented with a GUI the shows you the transfer of news per newsgroup.

Check for news & mail this will carry out both the above tasks - checking for new mail and news. Hotkey: Amiga-N

Send queued messages when you create a new message you can choose whether you want to send it or queue (to send at a later date). If you have any queued messages this option will send these messages. Hotkey: Amiga-S

Autocheck for new mail? will allow you to automatically check your POP3 server for new mail every five minutes.

Cleanup database allows you to cleanup and enhance the current Microdot database. When you 'delete' mails within Microdot, they don't actually delete from your hard drive until run 'cleanup database'.

The process is as follows:

  1. Scanning database - scans your database before it marks messages for deletion.

  2. Marking used messages - goes through the database, looks for mails which are marked for deletion.

  3. Removing messages - deletes all marked messages from the hard drive.

Empty TRASH clears the 'TRASH' group of its contents.

Search... enables you to do a search through the entire Microdot database. Enter a key word and Microdot will search through your mail folders and will display all mails relevant to this key word.

There are additional options - 'selected groups' allows you to highlight group headings (ie. within the group overview) and Microdot-II will only search within those groups. Searching within a 'message' rather than the index will search within the text of that message. This will take a long time, however.

Help... if you select this option the online AmigaGuide help file will be launched. Hotkey: HELP

About Microdot... this launches a GUI which gives information about the Microdot-II programmer, copyrights, version number etc. Hotkey: Amiga-?

Iconify will put Microdot-II into an iconified state (ie. will reduce the GUI to an icon size). Hotkey: Amiga-I

You can set the topic for the mail folder (basically a longer version of the group name). Select a signature for the group - the signatures are created within the settings. Auto expire will automatically delete mails from your folder after a certain time period. ie. "auto expire after 30 days" will delete and mail/news that is over 30 days old.

If, however, you decide you have had enough (maybe temporarily) you can unsubscribe with this option. A U will be placed in the box next to the newsgroup name. The next time you go to collect the latest news, unsubscribed newsgroups will be ignored.
