The SETI Institute conducts scientific research in the general field of Life in the Universe with an emphasis on the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
The Institute is home to more than 25 active research projects, most of them investigating the factors in the Drake Equation.
The largest research effort is Project Phoenix, the privately funded continuation of the Targeted Search portion of NASA's High Resolution Microwave Survey. The HRMS was terminated by Congress due to budget pressures in October 1993.
