TeX/LaTeX (fw_tex) Subsystems
fw_tex includes these subsystems:
- fw_tex.sw
- fw_tex.sw contains the software for TeX, LaTeX, and a number of
related programs:
- tex. Donald Knuth's typesetting system. Version 3.1415.
- latex. A document preparation system based on TeX.
Version 2e.
- LaTeX packages including psnfss (for using Postscript fonts with LaTeX),
the 'tools' package, the 'graphics' package, and the 'changebar' package.
See the documentation (or the book The Latex Companion by
Goossens, Mittelbach, & Samarin) for more information.
- xdvi. Previews TeX output (a .dvi file).
- dvips. Converts TeX output to PostScript.
- mf. MetaFont. Donald Knuth's font generation system.
Run by dvips and xdvi to generate missing font bitmaps.
- bibtex. Used with TeX/LaTeX to generate bibliographies.
- makeindex. Generates indexes.
- detex. Strips TeX and LaTeX commands from a file. Useful
as a preprocessor for 'spell.'
- A number of utilities for examining, generating, and converting
files used or created by TeX or MetaFont. See the reference pages
and documentation for more details.
- fw_tex.man
- Reference pages for all the programs in fw_tex.sw.
- fw_tex.doc
- Detailed documentation for some of the software in fw_tex.sw.
Some of the documentation is in the form of .dvi files, and so requires
either dvips or xdvi to be read.
- fw_tex.src
- Source for all the software and packages in fw_tex.sw. You shouldn't
need this unless you want to modify the programs.

Subsystem Disk Space Requirements
This section lists the subsystems (and their sizes in 512-byte
blocks) of fw_tex.
If you are installing this product for the first time, the
subsystems marked ``default'' are the ones that are installed if
you use the ``go'' menu item. To install a different set of
subsystems, use the ``install,'' ``remove,'' ``keep,'' and
``step'' commands in inst to customize the list of
subsystems to be installed, then select the ``go'' menu item.
Note: The listed subsystem sizes are approximate. Refer
to the Software Installation Administrator's Guide for
information on finding exact sizes.
Subsystem | Size (Kbytes)
|
---|
fw_tex.sw.tex (default) | 17506

fw_tex.man.tex (default) | 125
|
fw_tex.doc.tex (default) | 1632

Installation Method
All of the subsystems for
fw_tex can be installed using IRIX. You do not
need to use the miniroot. Refer to the Software Installation
Administrator's Guide for complete installation
instructions.
Here are some notes about the various programs that are included in
this distribution:
First, you don't need to set any environment variables for any of the
programs. You should only set TEX environment variables (e.g. TEXINPUTS)
if you want to change where the programs look for certain files.
This is almost always unnecessary. Check the reference pages for
individual programs for the meaning of various environment variables.
- tex. The standard input files for tex are located in
subdirectories of /usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex. If you want to add
your own files, put them in one of these subdirectories, or create
your own subdirectory in /usr/freeware/lib/texmf. This version of
tex recursively searches subdirectories, so as long as you put files
under this directory, they'll be found. For best searching performance,
though, make sure that any directory that's already present or that
you create contains only directories or only files; don't mix files
and subdirectories in the same directory.
- latex. Again, the standard latex2e files and packages are
contained in /usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex; most of them are in
/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex/latex2e. If you add your own packages,
follow the instructions above for adding TeX input files.
- mf. General mf input files are located in
/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/mf. Source for particular fonts is in
/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/fonts/.../src. .tfm files are in
/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/fonts/.../tfm.
- dvips.
dvips has been configured to run as a filter, so that it writes
its output on standard output. This way you can either send the
output to a file or to 'lpr.' You can change this behavior by
editing a configuration file; see the dvips documentation for
details. You may also want to change other configuration variables,
such as the amount of memory dvips thinks your printer has.
Since dvips can generate
bitmaps on demand by running MetaFont, no bitmaps are included
in this distribution. The first time you run dvips, it may spend
considerable time running MetaFont. But the results are saved, so
after a bitmap has been generated once, MetaFont won't be run again,
even on successive runs of dvips.
- xdvi. See the note about bitmap generation under dvips.
