The designers and engineers at MicroProse utilized cutting
edge technology from Silicon Graphics to create life-like 3D spaceships, worlds, and creatures.
MicroProse uses 2 Onyxs, 3 Indigo Extremes, and a variety of Indys from Silicon Graphics Inc., to run powerful software such as
Alias PowerAnimator and Composer Professional, also from Silicon Graphics, for the production of Star Trek Generations.
John Edwards, an animator with MicroProse, describes creating one of the scenes:
"The shot was broken into elements: stars, earth, earth atmosphere, Enterprise,
and beacon lights. The Earth image was from stock footage and touched up in Photoshop, which was
also used to create stars, earth atmosphere, and earth alpha channel.
The Enterprise was digitized then brought into PowerAnimator for texture mapping, lighting, and animation.
Texture maps were also created in Illustrator and Photoshop. All elements were
brought into Composer for compositing and fine tuning . Color correction was done by
using a combination of AdjustHSV, ColorCurves, and Gamma. Move2D was used for earth
placement and movement. Blur and FilmGrain were added to match the soft film look.
Elements were composited using Over and Add layering."
