Clarification of "Hand, Foot and Mouth" Disease
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION: I often accuse my husband of having "foot and mouth" disease, you
know, where he sticks his foot in his mouth when he says something weird. He
has countered with the name of a sickness he calls "Hand, Foot and Mouth"
disease and says that I must quit jibing him until I find out what it is. Can
you help? Is there such a disease and what is it? I must find out.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANSWER: Why can't I resist answering questions like yours? Perhaps because
we all need to smile a bit more often, and that's good for our health. Yes,
there is a condition known as "Hand, Foot and Mouth" disease. Its scientific
name is "exanthem-vesicularstomatitis" and is also known as summer-term
blains. It consists of a rash that is restricted to the hands and feet. A
red eruption is also seen on the tissue lining the mouth. The disease often
affects farmers and others in contact with livestock, and is more frequent in
younger children. It is caused by a virus (Coxsackie Group A type 16), is
relatively benign with few symptoms, complete recovery occurring
spontaneously. The only treatment required is to relieve any annoying
symptoms that might occur. Don't confuse this with "Foot (Hoof) and Mouth"
disease, a serious viral disease that only affects cloven hoofed animals.
