Hangover Cures
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUESTION: Have you got any good ideas on how to treat a hangover? I sure
could use some. I have been told that taking an aspirin or two before
starting can help. Any truth in that? Also could you comment on how a bite
of the dog that bit you can reduce your problems the next morning.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANSWER: There certainly is one idea, which somehow I don't think you will
like, that could help you with your hangover problem. It's called abstinence,
and if your hangovers are frequent and serious, it may be the best advice I
can give you. Actually there are no methods that have ever been found to
prevent a hangover, when the individual is intent on drinking more than his
body can handle. Hangovers result from some of the products that result from
the digestion of alcohol by the body, while others result from the toxic
effects of alcohol itself. Taking an aspirin won't help you at all, in fact
it may increase the levels of alcohol in your blood by as much as 30 percent
as it probably interferes with enzymes in your system that break down alcohol.
Take the aspirin in the morning, it may help with the headache. The next day
"shot" may also dull the headache, but it doesn't speed recovery at all.
Coffee doesn't speed the elimination of alcohol from the body, though its
stimulant properties may perk you up just a bit. Eating cabbage was a cure
proposed by the ancient Greeks, but their hangovers were monumental, for
cabbages won't work either.
