The Tandy 2000
and GT PowerComm FOSSIL Version
***********************************************************************
With the release of the FOSSIL (Fido Opus SEAdog Standard Interface
Layer) version of his GT PowerComm program, Paul Meiners has given
the Tandy 2000 owner one of the most powerful communications tools
available at any price.
To use GT PowerComm on your 2000, you will need the following files:
GT1221-1.ARC - The Documentation
GTF1221.ARC - The Executable Files
or
GTOF1221.ARC - No Host Mode Executable Files (saves 40K disk space)
OT2K_310.ARC - Rick Moore's Tandy 2000 FOSSIL Driver v. 3.1
These two external modules are available to allow a total of 10 protocols:
CKERMIT.ARC - Siliding Windows Kermit External Module, FOSSIL Version
(Rename CKERMIT.EXE to PCKERMIT.EXE)
GTFOSLZM.ARC - Zmodem External Module, FOSSIL Version
The following programs complement GT, and are written by James Davis.
They are fully endorsed by Paul, and are provided with the registered copy.
GTLOG731.ARC - Log File Utility for GT
GTCTL42.ARC - Sysop Utility for GT
**** IMPORTANT!! ****
The present release version of GT FOSSIL (12.21) has a bug that will all but
totally prevent it from functioning on the Tandy 2000 without the following
change to the default configuration:
Press Alt-I to bring up the configuration screen, and choose 32,
miscellaneous options. Choice 18 on this screen, "Suppress Window Whistle",
is set to a beginning value of FALSE by GT. Change this to TRUE.
An IBM-specific sound routine was left in the FOSSIL version that attempts
to output the window whistle to a port that doesn't exist on the 2000.
The results are disastrous!!
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
You will need to specify a large number of FILES and BUFFERS in your
CONFIG.SYS file to speed GT's operation and enable some of its functions.
I use FILES=50 and BUFFERS=45, but you probably can get by with less.
The Xmodem Buffers in the Alt-I configuration defaults to 8. You may
need more - experiment with this parameter for most efficient transfers.
The "Time Base" in the Alt-I menu is NOT functional, since all sound
generated in the FOSSIL version of GT is the Control-G "bell".
The 2000 only has one com port, and it is com1. DOS 02.11.02 refers to
this port as aux, rather than com1, but in the Alt-I menu, use com (1).
The "use BIOS for screen writes" is TRUE in the FOSSIL version, no matter
what the Alt-I setting.
The GTDOOR.BAT file must be in the same subdirectory as GT, the first
line of the file must be changed from "%1 com%2" to "%1 aux", and the
"pause" statement near the end must be removed for successful use of the
shell to DOS operation on the 2000.
Be sure that, in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you name GT's subdirectory as one
of DOS' paths, as well as setting that subdirectory as the "GTPATH"
variable in the DOS environment. For example:
PATH=C:\;C:\GT
SET GTPATH=C:\GT
This assumes your GT files are in the C:\GT subdirectory. This info is in
Paul's docs, but it is critical to the proper operation of GT and bears
repeating.
To send a Control-C (for use with CompuServe & others) it is necessary to
define a function key using the Alt-M command to %03 . Pressing the
function key will then send a ^C out the serial port. DO NOT press
Control-C from within GT! Turbo Pascal traps ^C, and GT will bomb.
If you wish to view ANSI color menus on BBSs that you call, you can use
the MODE utility that came with DOS to put the 2000 into color mode
prior to starting GT (MODE CO 80). This will slow down the screen writes
but will not affect protocol transfer speed.
That's about it - the rest of what you need to know can be found in Paul's
GT1221.DOC and GTHOST.DOC contained in GT1221-1.ARC. If anyone finds more
GT FOSSIL-related quirks for the 2000, leave me a message on my BBS at
(713) 980-9671, and I'll include them here.
I think we all owe Paul Meiners and Rick Moore a large debt of gratitude
for making this possible. Rick is happy to help the 2000 community by
keeping the Tandy 2000 FOSSIL driver current. Paul Meiners' sole
source of income is his P&M Software Company, distributing GT and his
TurboCalc spreadsheet program, through the shareware concept. If we want
this type of programming to continue, we MUST support it. Paul asks for a
$50 registration fee. PLEASE send him your check if you like the program
and intend to use it.
