OSHELP - OS COMMAND BBS PROGRAM INTERFACE ASSISTANCE
When you use the BBS OS command, you are actually changing operating programs
on the BBS. The mailbox program pauses while your command initiates running
a second and even third program. When these programs are finished running,
control is automatically returned to the BBS program.
OS DATE
Returns Date and Time
OS TIME
Returns Date and Time (duplicates DATE function)
OS SEARCH
A fast and powerful feature which allows you to search the BBS subdirectories
for files to download and databases for information of interest.
To request a search. you must use the command 'OS SEARCH' and include
two parameters:
1. Database or subdirectory to search
2. Search word
EXAMPLE: OS SEARCH ZIPCODES MADISON
(searches the ZIPCODE database for "MADISON" and returns its zip)
OS SEARCH BBS ATLANTA
(searches the BBS database for "ATLANTA" and returns information
on any found)
OS SEARCH ARRL ANTENNA
(searches the ARRL file subdirectory for the search word "ANTENNA"
and returns the matches with the name of the file and the first
line in the file that contains the search word)
OS SEARCH LIBRARY POTATO
(searches the LIBRARY subdirectory for the search word "POTATO"
and returns the matches with the name of the file and the first
line in the file that contains the search word)
To obtain a complete list of all subdirectories and databases on the BBS
which can be searched, use the command: OS SEARCH without additional
parameters.
Most files in the various subdirectories contain a "SUBJECT:" line which
lists the subject of that particular file. OS SEARCH is a convenient way of
getting a complete list of all subjects of files in a particular subdirectory.
Type: OS SEARCH (subdirectory) SUBJECT:
Of course you must supply the name of the subdirectory without the ().
EXAMPLE: OS SEARCH GENERAL SUBJECT:
You need not fear errors as the system is "friendly" and will provide
assistance or feedback on errors sent to it.
There is only one little quirk to the SEARCH function which you should be
familiar with...otherwise the system is very straightforward. If you use
only a two letter search word (for example in trying to locate BBS systems
in Minnesota...you use the search word: MN), the system will automatically
insert a space before and after the two letter search word. This is to
facilitate state abbreviations in database searches. The SEARCH function
will also discard any leading or trailing spaces you send as part of your
search word.
One other reminder...don't use quotation marks when specifying a search word
unless you expect the quotation mark to be included in the text you are
searching for.
Any questions? Ask the sysop!
