QDV -- Running QEdit with DesqView(tm)
Release: 1.00
Date: November 17th, 1989
QEdit is Copyright (C) 1985-1989 by SemWare.
All Rights Reserved.
DESCRIPTION
-----------
This contains a Program Information File (PIF) for use with DesqView
version 2.x. This PIF is contains good default parameters for running
QEdit under DesqView.
LICENSE
-------
These files are free to all users of QEdit.
INSTRUCTIONS
------------
To install QEdit into DesqView using this file, follow these
steps:
1. Put Q_-PIF.DVP into the directory where you keep Q.EXE
and your other QEdit programs and files.
2. Get into DesqView if you are not already.
2. Tap the DESQ key (Alt), and select (O)pen from the menu.
3. Select Add a Program (AP).
4. Select Other (O).
5. When prompted, specify the name of the directory (path)
where you placed the files in step 1. Both Q.EXE and
Q_-PIF.DVP must be in that directory, and it is helpful
if other programs you will use with QEdit like QMAC.EXE
or QCP.EXE are also there.
6. When "QEdit" appears on the screen as an option, move
the cursor to it, press Grey+ or Spacebar to select it,
and press Return to confirm.
7. Press Return again to tell DesqView you are done.
If you already had a program whose DesqView name was just "Q",
DesqView may beep and display an error message after step 6
above. If so, just select an alternate letter or two-letter
combination which you will use to call up QEdit.
Now QEdit is ready to run from inside DesqView. You can now
select (O)pen from the main menu, then hit (Q) to load QEdit. It
will run both full screen or within a small window.
CUSTOMIZING YOUR QEDIT SETUP
----------------------------
The operating parameters in Q_-PIF.DVP were chosen to be a
convenient "lowest common denominator" for QEdit users. You may
want to customize the settings to better suit your particular
needs. Here is what you can do:
1. Select (O)pen from the main menu.
2. Select Change a Program (CP), and hit (Q) to change
QEdit.
3. Change any of the parameters listed below to suit
your preferences.
4. Press RETURN when done.
PARAMETERS YOU CAN CHANGE
-------------------------
Keys to use on Open menu: [Q ]
You may want to use another name for QEdit, such as
(QE) or (QQ) perhaps.
Memory size (in K): [128]
The default allows editing of a few small to medium size
files, and the ability to shell to DOS.
If you routinely edit very large files, or run large
programs such as compilers from inside QEdit, you may
want to enlarge this number.
The minimum value for this number is 80, that's the
smallest amount of memory that QEdit will correctly
operate in under DesqView (however, you will not be able
to shell to DOS from QEdit in that little memory).
Program...: [Q.EXE]
You may want to add the full directory/path name of your
Q.EXE here. Example: C:\QEDIT\Q.EXE. See Directory
below for a reason why.
Parameters...: [ ]
You could add a /E or /L parameter here, to make QEdit
(2.08 or higher) load or execute a particular binary
macro file each time it loads. See the documentation
that came with QEdit 2.08 (READ.ME) for details.
Directory...: [your QEdit dir]
The default here will be the directory you specified as
the location of Q.EXE during installation. This will be
the default directory when QEdit starts. If you have a
normal "work" directory that you use with QEdit, you
will want to put that here.
However, if you change this to something other than the
directory that Q.EXE is in, you will have to add a full
path specification to the Program name above, so that
DesqView can find the Q.EXE file to load it.
Maximum Program Memory Size (in K): [ ]
By specifying a number here, you can cause DesqView to
be more flexible in allocating memory for QEdit. We
recommend you read your DesqView manual to understand the
appropriate use of this field.
Window Position: (several fields)
The defaults supplied cause QEdit to run full-screen on
a 25 by 80 screen. If you have a larger screen, or if
you wish QEdit to start in a small window, you may wish
to modify these numbers.
Allow Close Window Command? [Y]
When DesqView closes QEdit with the Close Window
command, QEdit does not get an opportunity to save any
changed files to disk. You may wish to set this to NO,
to prevent losing information if you were to
accidentally to use the Close Window command to close
QEdit without saving.
Can be swapped out: [ ]
If you do not wish QEdit to ever be swapped out to disk,
you could put NO here. This is solely your preference.
Initial mode: [ ]
If you have two monitors, you could use this field to
run QEdit on one monitor while other DesqView tasks run
in the other one. See your DesqView manual.
NOTE: All of the other fields in the Change a Program screens,
not mentioned above, should be left alone. They have been preset
for best operation with QEdit.
Some of the above is applicable only to DesqView versions 2.x or
higher. The above was tested under DesqView version 2.22.
