A Galahad "How To" Series Article .jc
&dOverview .jc
.i10 .a ll=68
Read this article if you are a Galahad beginner, or if you have not yet
used Galahad version 2.10. It will tell you how to make a working disk, and
introduce you to some of its features.
.i .a ll=d
&dIntroduction
Galahad version 2.10 is a new release of Galahad. If you are a new user
of Galahad we think you will like its ease of use. If you are a previous
Galahad user you will find that this new release acts the same as Galahad 2.07
in that it has the very same formatting commands, and the very same editing
commands, and the very same function key assignments. Therefore, those
familiar with previous versions of Galahad can continue to use Galahad 2.10 as
usual. However, those who wish to explore a little will find some new features
and additional on-line help. We invite you to get daring.
New users of Galahad should find that Galahad 2.10 makes it easier to get
that first paper done. It features:
.i8
.u3 Pop-up menus to assist you in learning the most used functions.
.u3 Pop-up help text that explain Galahad menus and the Galahad formatting
commands.
.u3 On-line style manual that gives tips on writing.
.u3 New and easier printer configuration for your printer.
.u3 Software tools to: .i10
Do spelling checking as you type in your text.
Search the dictionary for the correct spelling of a word.
Perform prose analysis of your text.
Do a complete spelling check with a new 34,000 word lexicon.
.i
Section I tells you how to make and organize your working disk to use
Galahad 2.10. It also shows you how to get started with Galahad. Section II
discusses how to run Galahad. Section III discusses some helpful information.
We recommend you read all three sections. But you &omust read the next
section: "Making a Galahad Working Disk", and if you have a printer you &omust
read the How To article: "How To Install A New Printer In Galahad 2.10."

&iFloppy%Disk%Computers
If you do not have a hard disk in your computer you will need to make a
Galahad Working Disk. Use a High Density disk because there are quite a few
files. If they are all on the same diskette Galahad is easier to use.
To prepare the disk do the following: .i8
.u3 1. .t8 Start up your computer with your system disk. If you have a new
computer and are just getting started, you should first make a &isystem%disk.
Read the Galahad How To article: "How to Set Up Your New Computer."
.i15 .a ll=63
.rbb14,64
Galahad, like many other programs, looks for a special file COMMAND.COM in
drive A:. Always keep a disk with COMMAND.COM in drive A:. Therefore, when
formatting a disk for drive A:, it is best to copy COMMAND.COM onto the disk
just after it has been formatted.
.x-5 .reb14,64 .st3,11,2 .i8 .a ll=d
.u3 2. .t8 Format a new high density disk. On Clarkson Zenith computers the
high density drive is drive B:, the disk drive on the right side of the
computer. (Be sure you use a high density diskette in the high density disk
drive -- regular disks will not work.) Format the disk with the following
instruction: .i12
A>&oFORMAT%%B:
.i
&iCopying%Galahad%files
Copy the following files on to your Galahad Working Disk, or to a hard
disk directory which is specified in the MS-DOS path command. For example, if
you got your Galahad Distribution Disks on 360K diskettes, and you are copying
to a high density disk, you would copy the files with the command:
A>&oCOPY%GAL2.EXE%B:
GAL2.EXE .t25 - The text formatter
PER.EXE .t25 - The editor
GUEN.EXE .t25 - The Guenevere Spelling Checker
BEDE.EXE .t25 - The Bedevere Word Finder
LANCE.EXE .t25 - Lancelot II Prose Analysis
STOCK.EXE .t25 - Checks for Cliches and Stock Phrases (Lancelot II)
DIRECT.EXE .t25 - Checks for Simple and Direct Style (Lancelot II)
LEX34.LEX .t25 - The Bedevere and Guenevere Lexicon
GALAHAD.INI .t25 - Printer configuration data
GALHELP.GHP .t25 - Galahad Help
STYLE.GHP .t25 - The Style Manual
If you want to do on-line spell checking, copy: SPELLER.COM and ADD.COM.
If you are a user of a PostScript printer (which allows Galahad to do
desktop publishing) copy: .i12
PS.DEF .t25 - PostScript subroutines for normal printing.
PSLAND.DEF .t25 - PostScript subroutines for printing sidewise.
PS=_FNT0.GMF .t25 - Font character size for each font.
PS=_FNT1.GMF
PS=_FNT2.GMF
PS=_FNT3.GMF
PS=_FNT4.GMF
PS=_FNT5.GMF
PS=_FNT6.GMF

You now have a Galahad working disk.
&dSECTION%II .jc
&dRunning%Galahad .jc
Galahad is run by executing the command: GAL2. When GAL2 starts up it
activates PER.COM and reads in the GALAHAD.INI file. To learn how to use
Galahad refer to the GALAHAD II Manual, Chapters 1 and 2. Since we know you
want to try it out &iright &inow just follow the steps below to type in a
letter.
&iTyping%a%Letter
.i8
.u3 1. .t8 Your Galahad working disk should be in drive B:. If the MS-DOS
prompt is A>, enter &oB: and press &oReturn (Return is marked Enter on some
computers). The prompt should change to B>.
.u3 2. .t8 Enter: &oGAL2 and press &oReturn.
.u3 3. .t8 The "greeting" screen will be displayed. Hold down the &oCtrl key
while pressing &oReturn. You will now have a blank screen with the cursor in
the upper left corner.
.u3 4. .t8 Start typing your letter. Pretend that your screen is a piece of
paper. Use the Spacebar to space over for the date etc. (there are better
ways). The Return key will get you to the next line, the Backspace key will
erase the character to the left of the cursor, the arrow keys will let you move
within the area of the screen where you have entered text.
.u3 5. .t8 When you have finished your letter press &oShift &oReturn. You will
see two menus. Press &oF and &oS. You will be prompted for file name to be
used to save your letter. Enter a name (no more than 8 letters or digits, and
&ono blanks). Press &oReturn. You did it!.
.u3 6. .t8 To leave Galahad press &oShift &oReturn. Press &oC then &oB.
.u To bring your letter back in to change it:
.u3 1. .t8 At the MS-DOS B> prompt enter: &oGAL2
.u3 2. .t8 Press &oShift &oReturn. Press &oF then &oL. Select your letter
with the Down Arrow key until it is highlighted, then press &oReturn.
.u3 3. .t8 Edit your letter, and save it as before.
.i
Now to take full advantage of this very powerful editor and word
processor, you need to read at least the first two chapters of the Galahad II
Manual. Read any of the Galahad How To articles that discuss tasks you wish to
perform. The more you learn the easier Galahad, and computing in general will
be.

&dSECTION%III .jc
&dSome%Helpful%Information .jc
&iUsing%Bedevere
Bedevere searches a dictionary (really a lexicon) for the correct spelling
of a word. From Galahad place the cursor on the word you want to check and
press the keys &oESC &oF1 (Function Key 1). A window containing one or more
words will appear in about 5 seconds. If many words appear, use the arrow keys
to scroll the words in the window. Press &oESC to return to editing. Scroll
the screen so that the word you are spell checking is in the upper half of the
screen. This will prevent the Bedevere pop-up menu from covering the word.
You will want to see both words as you edit.
If you have no idea how to spell a word, enter it the way it sounds. If
this still does not find the word enter the first few characters and end it
with a *. E.g., to find 'aficianado' try afis*, or even ephi*. (Move the
cursor to the left of the * before you press &oESC%F1&n). Bedevere looks up
proper names separately from other words. A word which starts with a capital
letter is considered a proper name. Thus you must change the case of initial
letter of the initial word of a sentence.
&iUsing%Guenevere
Guenevere (GUEN.COM) is a free standing spelling checker. Its
instructions are in the How To article: "How to Use Guenevere."
&iUsing%Lancelot%II
Lancelot II checks for stylistic problems in your writing. To invoke this
style checker place the cursor at the beginning of the paragraph or section
which you wish to check. Then press &oESC%F2. Now move the cursor down the
screen with the arrow keys. The section that you wish to analyze will appear
in reverse video. Now press &oESC%F3. The analysis menu will appear. Just
press &oReturn to begin analysis. If at any time you wish to end analysis
press &oESC and you will be returned to your text.
&iUsing%Speller
Speller is an on-line spelling checker. To use it, &ibefore you run GAL2
you must run Speller with the command: B>&oSPELLER =. It will tell you that it
is loaded into memory. Then you run Galahad as discussed above. You can turn
the spell checking off and on with the Galahad menus. See Galahad II Manual,
Appendix H, for more information.
&dPrinter%Configuration
One more important subject. When you execute the Galahad on the
distribution disk it tells you that it is &inot%configured for any printer.
You must configure Galahad for the printer you choose to use. The file
GALAHAD.INI contains printer configuration information. This is the
information which Galahad needs to know about the printer it is going to use
for printing. It must know the printer so it can do things like underline
words, do one-half line subscripts, print in bold, etc. The common on-campus
printers are in GALAHAD.INI. Before you use one of these printers you must
configure your Galahad for it. Galahad can be configured for any printer
listed in GALAHAD.INI by pressing the following two keys &oESC followed by &op.
This will pop-up a menu from which you can select the desired printer. Once
selected it remains selected until you leave Galahad, or change it with &oESC
&op (you can also do this with menu selection - Press &oShift-&oReturn &oP
&oC).
Once you know what campus printer you will be using you should tell
Galahad which one, and then you will not have to keep configuring Galahad each
time you use it. To make Galahad know your normal printer, do the following:
.i8
.u3 1. .t8 Load the file GALAHAD.INI from your working disk. Do this by
pressing: &oShift &oReturn, then &oReturn, then &oReturn. Select GALAHAD.INI
by moving the down arrow key to it, and press &oReturn.
.u3 2. .t8 The second line at the top of the screen will read:
'not=_configured'. This is actually a printer configuration which does
nothing. Change this line to the name of the desired printer. This must be
entered exactly as it is below in one of the configurations (without the ',').
.u3 3. .t8 (Optional) Delete the 'not=_configured" configuration.
.u3 4. .t8 Save the GALAHAD.INI file by pressing &oShift &oReturn, then
&oReturn, then S.
