Introducing PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE is the "try before you buy" version of
PROCOMM PLUS. DATASTORM has created it to allow you to "test drive"
PROCOMM PLUS before committing your hard earned dollars. This has
benefits for both the users and the authors as described below.
First of all, though, you must be aware that PROCOMM PLUS and PROCOMM
PLUS TEST DRIVE ARE NOT FREE SOFTWARE, NOR ARE THEY IN THE PUBLIC
DOMAIN. Both programs are fully copyrighted works protected to the
full extent of US and international copyright law.
Why allow a program "test drive"? PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE is based
on a marketing technique called "shareware" or "user-supported
software", which is a means for the computing community to receive
quality software while directly supporting authors. It is based on
the idea that the value and utility of software is often best
assessed by the user on his or her own system. Only after using a
program can one really determine whether it serves personal
applications, needs and tastes.
The benefits to users are fairly obvious: you are allowed to
thoroughly evaluate the software before purchasing it. How many
times have you purchased an expensive piece of software only to find
that it doesn't do what you need?
Software authors benefit by creating a distribution channel of
satisfied users who recommend and pass along their product. This
"pyramid effect" can be a very effective marketing technique, and is
vastly less expensive than traditional marketing techniques. This is
not to say that "test drives" and more traditional methods like
magazine advertising are mutually exclusive. They may be used
together very effectively to target different segments of the market.
What does this mean to you? While you are granted a limited license
to evaluate the program on a trial basis, regular use of the program
requires purchase. What is a "trial basis"? Kicking the program
around over a weekend to see how it works is certainly using it on a
trial basis. Installing and using the program in a production test
environment for two weeks is trial use. Using the software twice a
week for regular work for three months is not and therefore requires
purchase. Using the program regularly for any regular task,
especially if it has replaced other software, is not trial use.
These examples are not intended as definitive rules, but more as
general guidelines.
You are not allowed to modify the software under any conditions. We
do, however, encourage you to create "add-on" support utilities and
programs to enhance your and others' enjoyment of the program.
You may copy the program for the trial use of others subject to the
rules outlined in the previous section "Limited License to Copy". In
1
general, you may only copy the program in complete and unmodified
form, as we distribute it.
You may not charge any fee for copies of the program without written
permission from DATASTORM. This applies especially to disk vendors.
Some services mislead customers into thinking they have purchased the
software, rather than just the disk and duplication service. If you
have purchased this product from a disk vendor and feel they were
misleading about what you have purchased, please write us and we will
investigate the matter.
You may not include PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE with any other product,
whether hardware or software, without specific license. For example,
you may not include PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE on the hard drives of
computers you sell, or include it with copies of software you have
developed.
2
Purchasing PROCOMM PLUS
After using PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE for a while, you need to decide
if you want to continue using it on a regular basis. If not, please
feel free to continue copying it for the trial use of others, or to
pass your copy along to a friend.
If you do decide to continue using it, it must be purchased. PROCOMM
PLUS is available from many retailers around the world; please
consult your local dealer. If he doesn't have it, it is also
available directly from DATASTORM.
Please note that there are two versions of the software: PROCOMM PLUS
and PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE. The TEST DRIVE version may be copied
and used for evaluation as described above. The purchased version of
PROCOMM PLUS, however, may only be copied for backup purposes. After
receiving your purchased copy of PROCOMM PLUS you may continue to
copy PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE for friends; you may not copy PROCOMM
PLUS.
Why should you purchase PROCOMM PLUS? To pay for the software which
you are gainfully using, and to support its authors and encourage
them to produce more high quality software. And because regular use
of PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE without purchase is a violation of the
license under which you use it.
When you purchase PROCOMM PLUS you will receive the following:
- Perpetual license to use the software you have purchased.
- A two disk program set including the program itself, an external
setup program, an installation program, a keyboard remapping
program, a small but fast text editor and other useful
utilities. You will also receive numerous sample script files
for logging onto your favorite on-line services, dialing
directories for several major cities, and a list of BBS systems
around the country.
- A 300+ page professionally written and printed manual which
includes a tutorial, index and introduction to
telecommunications.
- 90 days telephone technical support.
- Free membership offers to several on-line services.
- Much, much more.
To purchase PROCOMM PLUS, visit your local dealer. If he doesn't
have it, you may also purchase direct from DATASTORM. To order via
credit card, call our business office at (314) 474-8461. Cash and
check purchasers should use the order form in the back of this
manual.

Welcome to PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE is everything you need to go on-line. Here's
a summary of its major features:
Fully-Automated Dialing Directory
You can keep the names and numbers of up to 200 computers in a
Dialing Directory--and you can create and use any number of Dialing
Directories. PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE lets you include up to 10
dialing codes in your Dialing Directory entries, so you can easily
access long-distance carriers or dial out through a PBX system. You
can have PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE dial either a single number or a
list of numbers, and PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE will automatically
redial if a number is busy. It keeps track of the date of your last
call, and the total number of calls for each entry. In addition, it
keeps a log of the date and time of all calls so that you can easily
verify your telephone bills.
Error-Correcting File-Transfer Protocols
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE supports 13 standard protocols, and it allows
you to specify up to 3 "external" protocols.
A Powerful Script Language
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE's ASPECT script language is an extremely
powerful, full-featured programming language with conditionals
(If/Then/Else and Switch/Case), advanced screen handling, file I/O,
mathematical functions, looping, memory variables, subroutines and
much more. You can use script files to perform automated log-ons,
unattended file transfers, and many other tasks. Or, you can use a
script file to have PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE "come alive" any time,
night or day. For example, tell PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE to call your
favorite information service, download the required data, and print a
report; all while you get a good nights sleep, and when telephone and
connect rates are at their lowest!
Terminal Emulation
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE emulates 16 popular video-display terminals.
Terminal emulation permits you to run full-screen mainframe
applications using your PC as a remote terminal.
Context-Sensitive Help
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE can give you full-screen detailed help no
matter where you are in the program. The context-sensitive help
facility always knows "what you are doing" and displays help on the
current task.
4
Keyboard Macros
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE features 10 "global" macro keys for storing
frequently transmitted character strings such as user ID's and
passwords.
Line Settings
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE operates at the following baud rates: 300,
1200, 2400, 3800, 9600, 19,200, 38,400, 57,600 and 115,200. It can
operate with Space, Even, Odd, Mark or No parity; 7 or 8 data bits;
and 1 or 2 stop bits. PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE supports up to 8 user-
definable serial ports.

5
Starting PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
What You'll Need
- Computer: an IBM PC, XT, or AT computer (or a computer that is
compatible with any of these).
- Memory: at least 192K of available RAM.
- Operating System: PC-DOS or MS-DOS, version 2.0 or later.
- Disk Drives: at least one floppy-disk drive, or at least one
floppy-disk drive and one hard-disk drive.
- Display: A monochrome monitor with a monochrome display adapter;
a composite monitor with a Color Graphics Adapter; an Enhanced
Color Display with an Enhanced Graphics Adapter; or a monitor
and display adapter compatible with any of these.
- Modem: Virtually any modem, Hayes-compatible or not, external or
internal, any speed.
- Serial port: Required only if you're using an external modem.
Installing PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
If you received PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE directly from DATASTORM, or
from an authorized distributor, there is very little to do to install
it. Simply copy the contents of the distribution disk onto a working
diskette or your hard disk. Be aware that PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
will create a number of support files, so leave plenty of room.
If you downloaded PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE from a BBS or on-line
service, it probably came in archived format. A file archive,
usually identified with a file extension of .ARC, is a group of
related files that have been collected together and then compressed
into a single file. Before using the files within the archive they
must be un-archived into their original and separate form. This can
be achieved using any of a number of "archive utilities" such as
ARC.EXE (from System Enhancement Associates), ARCE.EXE (also from
SEA) or PKUNPAK.COM (from PKWARE). These programs use different
command syntax; to get a listing of the proper commands to use,
execute the program without any parameters. For example, entering
PKUNPAK [CR]
will give you a listing of the command options available for PKXARC.
6
Setting Up PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
Setting Up Your Modem
Before you can start using PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE, you need to make
sure that your modem is set up properly.
What you need to do to your modem depends on whether you have an
internal modem (a modem on a board inside your computer) or an
external modem (a modem separate from your computer).
To set up an external modem
If you have not already connected your modem to your computer and to
the telephone line, do so now--your modem's manual describes how to
do this.
Most modems have a set of switches that set certain operating
characteristics for the modem. You'll need to check the setting of
two of them in order to use PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE to its fullest.
Look in your modem's manual for information about these switches.
(The manual may refer to them as "modem switches," "configuration
switches," or "DIP switches.")
You'll need to set two of your modem's switches:
- The CD (Carrier Detect) Switch. This is switch 6 on most
Hayes-compatible modems. Set this switch so that your modem
controls the CD line (with the other setting of this switch, the
CD line is not controlled by the modem).
- The DTR (Data Terminal Ready) Switch. This is switch 1 on most
Hayes-compatible modems. Set this switch so that your modem
monitors the status of the DTR line (with the other setting of
this switch, the modem ignores the status of the DTR line).
Note: If your modem doesn't have switches, it will have software
commands you can use for the same purpose. Look in your modem's
manual to find the commands that control CD and DTR, then include
these commands in the modem's initialization command.
To set up an internal modem
An internal modem can be set to work on any of two (or more) "COM
ports" (communications ports).
COM ports--also known as serial ports--are typically used for (in
addition to modems) serial printers and mouse pointing devices. If
such a device is already connected to your computer, it is using one
of your COM ports, and you won't be able to use that port for your
modem. You should find out which COM port is used for that device,
then make sure your modem is set to work on a different COM port.
(Refer to your modem's manual for information about setting its COM
port.)
7
It doesn't matter which COM port your modem will be using, as long as
you tell PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE which COM port that is. PROCOMM PLUS
TEST DRIVE can work with any of eight COM ports--COM 1 through COM 8.
Note: If your modem has a CD or a DTR switch, set it as described
above for an external modem. If it doesn't have these switches, check
your modem's manual to see if there are software commands you can use
for the same purpose. If there are, include these commands in the
modem's initialization command.
Setting Up Your Computer
To run PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE most efficiently, you'll need to make
sure that your CONFIG.SYS file and your AUTOEXEC.BAT file contain
certain commands.
To set up a hard-disk system
The AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, if they exist, are located in
the root directory of your disk. If you're not familiar with these
files, consult your DOS manual or a book about DOS to see how to
modify these files as recommended below.
You can start PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE from any directory on your disk
by specifying the PCPLUS directory (the directory where you've
installed PROCOMM PLUS) in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file's PATH command.
When PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE needs to access files it uses for the
Dialing Directory, the Setup facility, keyboard macros, and the
translation table it normally looks only in the current directory
(and creates them there if they do not exist). If you want to keep
these files in some other directory, specify that directory in a SET
PCPLUS command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file--PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
will look for those files in that directory if it doesn't find them
in the current directory.
For example, if you wanted to keep the PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE files
in the directory \COM\PCPLUS, you would include this command in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
SET PCPLUS=C:\COM\PCPLUS
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE needs to access many files at the same time.
So that these files can be accessed, you need to include this command
in your CONFIG.SYS file:
FILES=20
To speed up accessing your disk, include a BUFFERS command in your
CONFIG.SYS file:
BUFFERS=20
8
To set up a floppy-disk system
Include a FILES and BUFFERS command in your CONFIG.SYS file, as
described above for a hard disk system. If you're not familiar with
the CONFIG.SYS file, consult your DOS manual or a book about DOS to
see how to create or modify it.
Setting Up PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
If you're just starting with PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE for the first
time, you'll probably want to go on-line as soon as possible.
Although PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE lets you change over 100 set-up
specifications, the only thing you must do in order to get started is
make sure that PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE knows which COM port your
modem is using. To do so, access the Line Settings option (Alt-P)
after starting PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE.
Note: If you're using a modem that's not Hayes-compatible (your
modem's manual will tell you if it is), you must give PROCOMM PLUS
TEST DRIVE certain information about how your modem works. You can do
this using the Setup facility (Alt-S) after you start PROCOMM PLUS
TEST DRIVE.
Starting PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
- Make sure the DOS prompt (C>) is showing on your screen.
- Change to the drive and/or directory where your PROCOMM PLUS
TEST DRIVE files reside.
- Type PCPLUSTD and press [Enter].
The PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE logo appears on your screen, and PROCOMM
PLUS TEST DRIVE initializes your modem.
- Press any key to display the PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE information
screen.
This screen describes the terms under which you may use and copy
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE. When you purchase PROCOMM PLUS no such
screen will appear.
- Press any key to enter PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE Terminal mode.
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE enters Terminal mode.
Note: PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE uses an overlay structure. If you are
running from a floppy diskette, from time to time PROCOMM PLUS TEST
DRIVE will need to access the PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE disk in drive
A. You must leave this disk in drive A while you are running PROCOMM
PLUS TEST DRIVE.
Exiting PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
To exit PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE and return to DOS:
9
- Press [Alt-X].
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE asks you to confirm that you want to exit and
return to DOS.
- Press [Y] to confirm that you want to exit.
Converting from ProComm 2.4.2
Converting an existing ProComm 2.4.2 installation to PROCOMM PLUS is
a relatively simple task. Some files may be used without
modification, some will need to be changed, and some must be
recreated.
ProComm keyboard macro (.KEY) and translate table (.XLT) files may be
used without modification. Simply rename PROCOMM.KEY to PCPLUS.KEY,
and PROCOMM.XLT to PCPLUS.XLT.
If you are using a host mode welcome file (PROCOMM.MSG), rename it to
PCPLUS.NWS. PCPLUS.MSG is used to store host mode mail messages.
The dialing directory file structure has changed completely, so
PROCOMM.DIR must be converted. To do so, run the supplied convert
program CVTDIR.EXE. This program will transfer your existing entries
from PROCOMM.DIR to PCPLUS.DIR.
The parameter file structure has also changed, but no convert routine
is supplied. Begin by reviewing (or printing) the setup options you
have specified within ProComm. Now execute the PROCOMM PLUS setup
facility and compare its defaults to what you used with ProComm and
make any pertinent changes. Please note one change: ProComm used
several "output translation characters" which PROCOMM PLUS does not
support. The non-supported characters are the exclamation point (!)
for a carriage return, and the vertical bar (|) for an escape. The
caret (^) for a control character and tilde (~) for a pause are still
supported. In PROCOMM PLUS, use a Ctrl-M (^M) in place of the
exclamation point to send a carriage return; use Ctrl-left bracket
(^[) to send an escape.
ProComm command files (*.CMD) are easily converted to PROCOMM PLUS
ASPECT command files. Begin by renaming all .CMD files to .ASP files
(REN *.CMD *.ASP). Within those files make two changes. First, make
sure that all command keywords are completely spelled out. PROCOMM
PLUS does not support abbreviated keywords. Secondly, change all the
output translation characters as described above.
In addition, several script commands have changed:
- SET BACKSPACE IN DEST|NONDEST is now SET BACKSPACE DEST|NONDEST.
- SET BACKSPACE OUT is no longer supported.
- SET CR_IN CR|CR_LF is now SET CR CR|CR_LF.
- SET CR_OUT is no longer supported. Use PCKEYMAP to assign the
output value for the Enter key.
10
- SET FLOWCTRL ON|OFF is now SET SOFTFLOW ON|OFF.
After making these simple changes you should be off and running with
PROCOMM PLUS.
11
Using PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
You can enter PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE commands when PROCOMM PLUS TEST
DRIVE is in Terminal mode. The bottom line of the screen is called
the "Status line". The status line contains information about
current PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE settings and options.
You tell PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE what you want to do by giving it
commands. You enter a PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE [Alt] key command by
holding down the [Alt] key while you press the appropriate function
key or letter key. For example, here's how to enter the [Alt-Z]
command, which displays the Command Menu (a list of all the other
[Alt] key commands):
- Hold down the [Alt] key and press the [Z] key.
You can enter nearly all of the commands listed on the Command Menu
the same way you entered the [Alt-Z] command--by holding down the
[Alt] key while you press the other key. You can display the Command
Menu whenever you need to find out what command to use. However, you
can enter a command using [Alt] at any time, regardless of whether
not the Command Menu is displayed on your screen.
Note: The Command Menu is part of PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE's help
facility. Pressing [Alt-Z] displays information about whatever you're
doing. For example, if you were to press [Alt-Z] now (with the
Command Menu on the screen), PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE would display

Learning PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE Features
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE comes with a 40K on-line help file (called
PCPLUS.HLP) to speed you on your way to learning the system. To
access the help facility simply press [Alt-Z] at any point in the
program. Help text specific to the task at hand will be displayed.
This on-line help facility is more than adequate for learning the
majority of PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE features. When you purchase
PROCOMM PLUS you will receive a 300+ page professionally written and
printed manual that includes sections on every feature, a tutorial,
an index and an introduction to telecommunications.
If you prefer to read printed text, we've included a program called
PRINTHLP.EXE which will create a readable, printable copy of the help
text in a file called PCPLUSTD.TXT.

PROCOMM PLUS Host Mode
The PROCOMM PLUS Host mode lets a remote user log on to your computer
and use it like a BBS. Host mode features include:
. Uploading and downloading files.
. Sending and receiving messages (mail).
. Running PROCOMM PLUS or DOS commands on your computer by the
remote user.
. Two levels of security.
. A customized log-on message.
. A history of log-ons.
. On-line help.
Setting up Host Mode
You'll need to specify the following information using the Host
Options portion of the Setup facility.
Welcome Message This is the message a remote user sees after
connecting to your system.
System Type Your system can be either "open" or
"closed." If your system is open, any new
user will be able to log on to your system.
If your system is closed, only users you
specify will be able to log on.
Auto Baud Detect This specifies whether PROCOMM PLUS will
automatically change its baud rate when a
connection is made at a different baud rate
than that to which PROCOMM PLUS is set.
Connection Type This specifies whether the remote computers
will be connected to yours via modem or via
a direct (null modem) cable.
Upload Directory Specifies where files uploaded to Host mode
will be placed. If not assigned, files will
be placed in the current directory.
Download Directory Specifies which directory normal users will
have access to for the F)iles and D)ownload
commands. If not assigned, will default to
the current directory.
Hangup and Auto Make sure the commands specified using the
Answer Commands Setup facility match those required by your
modem.
13
Setting Up the User File
For each remote user of Host mode, PROCOMM PLUS keeps a user name,
password, and privilege level in a file called PCPLUS.USR. If your
system is closed, you'll need to add the user information to the
PCPLUS.USR file before starting Host mode. If your system is open,
PROCOMM PLUS will add new users when they log on.
There are two categories of remote users--"normal users" and
"privileged users." Privileged users can do more when connected than
can normal users. The user status is indicated in the PCPLUS.USR
entry by a 0 for normal users or a 1 for privileged users. When
PROCOMM PLUS adds a new user, that user is given a privilege level of
0.
Here is the format for each entry in the PCPLUS.USR file:
Lastname;Firstname;Password;Privilege;Comment
Lastname The total number of characters in the last
Firstname name and first name can be no more than 30,
and they must be entered in uppercase
letters.
Password The password can consist of no more than
eight characters. If you're entering it
using your word processor, you must enter
the password in uppercase letters.
Privilege The privilege level is a single character.
The number 1 indicates a privileged user;
the number 0 indicates a normal user.
Comment You can optionally include a comment.
The total number of characters in the line cannot exceed 80
characters.
Here are examples of two lines in a PCPLUS.USR file:
DOE;JOHN;BORSCHT;1; * SALES MANAGER, EASTERN REGION *
SMITH;JANE;POODLE;0; * NEW USER *
NOTE: PROCOMM PLUS allows you to omit the last name in one entry in
the file. This lets you enter a special entry for yourself, the
SYSOP, so that remote users can address mail to "SYSOP." For example:
;SYSOP;MYBOARD;1; * SYSTEM OPERATOR *
Notice that although you omit the last name you still need to enter
the semicolon before the first name.
14
Starting Host Mode
To start from Host mode, make sure PROCOMM PLUS is set to the maximum
baud rate at which your modem can operate. Press [Alt-Q] to start
Host mode from Terminal mode; use the HOST command to start it from a
script file.
What Happens When a Remote User Logs On
When a remote user calls and connects, Host mode displays the welcome
message (if specified), then prompts the user to enter a name.
If the name entered by the user is not in the PCPLUS.USR file and if
the Host system is closed, the user is disconnected.
If the Host system is open, the name is added to the PCPLUS.USR file,
the user is prompted to enter a password and to confirm that
password, and the password is added to the file. This privilege level
for this user is 0 (normal user).
If the name entered by the user is in the PCPLUS.USR file, the user
is prompted to enter a password. If the password entered matches
what's in the file entry for that user name, the user is given access
to the Host system at the privilege level specified in the PCPLUS.USR
file entry.
If the password entered does not match what's in the file entry, the
user is given two more chances to enter the password correctly. If it
is not entered correctly by the third time, the user is disconnected.
What Remote Users Can Do
These are the commands the remote user can select. The user can
select a command by typing its first letter.
Normal Users
Here are the commands available to the normal user:
Files This command displays a list of all files in
the download directory, which are the files
the user can download.
Upload This command begins a file transfer from the
remote user's computer to your computer. The
files are stored in the host upload
directory if one has been specified;
otherwise, they are stored in the current
directory.
Help This command displays the PCPLUS.HHP file.
Time This command displays the current time and
the time the remote user logged on.
15
Chat This command sounds an alarm on your
computer and waits for you to press [F1] .
When you press [F1], PROCOMM PLUS places
your computer in Chat mode, which works like
the Chat mode entered from Terminal mode.
Goodbye This command displays the same information
as the Time command, terminates the user,
then prepares Host mode to answer another
call.
Leave mail This command lets the remote user leave
private and public messages. Private
messages can be read only by the addressee
and the sender.
Read mail This command lets the remote user read
messages.
Privileged Users
The commands available to the privileged user include all those
available to the normal user, plus two more that give the privileged
user complete control of the host system.
Abort This command lets the remote user abort Host
mode operation and return to Terminal mode
or to a script file.
When the remote user selects this command,
PROCOMM PLUS asks whether to disconnect the
remote user before returning to Terminal
mode. If the remote user wants to remain in
control of PROCOMM PLUS, he should not
disconnect.
16
Shell This command lets the remote user access DOS
on your computer, just as if he were sitting
at your keyboard.
NOTE: Because a privileged user has access
to DOS on your computer, he can access any
file on your computer (he can even reformat
your disk!), so you should consider
carefully before assigning a remote user
privileged status.
NOTE: The Shell command redirects all
monitor and keyboard I/O to the COM port.
Since COM I/O does not function the same as
video and keyboard I/O, certain conditions
may cause your computer to lock up. One such
condition is running a program that writes
directly to the screen buffer. Other such
conditions include pressing [Backspace] ,
[Esc] , and possibly other key sequences
when using DOSEdit, CED or similar keyboard-
enhancing programs. (These problem arises
from DOS and the other programs, not PROCOMM
PLUS.)
Besides the two additional commands described above, a privileged
user can include a directory path as part of the file specification
when downloading a file. If no directory path is included, the
current directory is used.
What the System Operator Can Do
Controlling the Remote User's Keyboard
When a remote user connects to PROCOMM PLUS' Host mode, your screen
shows everything that appears on the remote user's screen, including
the log-on procedure and the menu of commands. PROCOMM PLUS will
respond to anything you type just as if the remote user had typed it.
Entering Chat Mode
When a remote user is connected, you can enter Chat mode at any time
to converse back and forth.
To enter Chat mode, press [F1]. To return to normal Host mode
operation, press [Esc].
Disconnecting the Remote User
Press [Ctrl-X]. PROCOMM PLUS disconnects and prepares to answer
another call.
17
Logging On
When a remote user is not connected, you can log on to your own Host
mode system and use all the commands the Host mode menu except for
Upload, Download, and Chat.
To logon, press [F2]. PROCOMM PLUS asks if you want to continue
answering calls from remote users. If you press [N], PROCOMM PLUS
won't let a remote user connect while you're logged on. If you press
[Y], PROCOMM PLUS will let a remote user connect to your system while
you're logged on. However, the remote user will not be able to log on
until you log off.
PROCOMM PLUS asks if you want to log on as the SYSOP.
Press [Y] to log on as the SYSOP, or press [N] to log on as a remote
user.
Exiting Host Mode
Press [Esc]. If a remote user is connected, PROCOMM PLUS asks
whether to disconnect the user. Press [Y] to disconnect the user and
exit Host mode, or press [N] to exit Host mode but maintain the
connection.
PROCOMM PLUS returns you to Terminal mode or (if Host mode was
started from a script file) to the script file.
Managing Host Mode Files
In addition to the PCPLUS.USR file, there are four other files used
in Host mode with which you may need to work from time to time.
The Log-On Message File
If you create a file called PCPLUS.NWS, PROCOMM PLUS will display the
contents of this file to a remote user after the user logs on.
The Help File
When the remote user selects the Help command from the Host-mode
menu, PROCOMM PLUS displays the contents of the file PCPLUS.HHP. This
is an ordinary ASCII text file that you can modify using any word
processor that works with ASCII files.
The History File
PROCOMM PLUS keeps information about what happens during Host-mode
operation in a file called PCPLUS.HST. PCPLUS.HST is an ordinary
ASCII file that you can read or modify with any word processor that
can work with ASCII files.
The Upload Directory File
When a remote user uploads a file to your system, PROCOMM PLUS
18
records that information in a file called PCPLUS.ULD.
The Message Files
PROCOMM PLUS keeps messages left by remote users and the SYSOP in a
file called PCPLUS.MSG. When a remote user or the SYSOP deletes a
message, it remains in the PCPLUS.MSG file, even though it is no
longer readable from within Host mode. You can use a program called
PCMAIL, which is separate from but provided with PROCOMM PLUS, to
read or remove deleted messages in the PCPLUS.MSG file.
When you use PCMAIL to remove the deleted messages, it also removes
the header information for those messages (the addressee, the sender,
the subject, the date, etc.) from the PCPLUS.HDR file, in which this
information is kept for all messages.
Where to Keep These Files
The first time you start Host mode after installing PROCOMM PLUS on
your computer, PROCOMM PLUS creates these files in the current
directory (except for PCPLUS.ULD, which is created when the first
remote user uploads a file). When you start Host mode at later times,
PROCOMM PLUS looks for these files first in the current directory and
then (if it doesn't find them in the current directory) in the
directory that's specified with the SET PCPLUS= command in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
19
ASPECT Script Language
One of the most powerful features included in PROCOMM PLUS and
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE is the ASPECT script language. ASPECT is an
extremely powerful, full-featured programming language with
conditionals (If/Then/Else and Switch/Case), advanced screen
handling, string manipulation, file I/O, mathematical functions,
branching, memory variables, subroutines and more.
Script files can be used to perform automated logons, unattended file
transfers and many other tasks.
Introduction
Each line in an ASPECT script file begins with a command word and may
be followed by one or more "parameters," which specify the particular
way you want the command to work. Commands and parameters conform to
certain rules which are called "syntax." Like the syntax of spoken
language, "command syntax" ensures that the meaning of the command
statement is clear and unambiguous. ASPECT script files have a file
extension of ASP.
Command Words
- Each command word begins on a separate line.
- Each command word must be spelled out completely.
- Commands and parameters are not case-sensitive except string
information between quotes.
- The maximum length of a command line is 132 characters,
including spaces.
- Each command must be complete on one line.
- Comments are delimited with a semicolon(;). Any characters to
the right of a semicolon are ignored and can be used for
programmer's comments.
Command Parameters
- Command parameters (arguments) always follow a command word on
the same line.
- You must enter a parameter unless it is enclosed in brackets.
- String variables and quoted strings are limited to a maximum of
80 characters.
- Numeric variables and integer numbers are signed integers with a
range of -32768 through 32767.
20
- Labels are up to eight characters in length, end in a colon, and
begin on a separate line; e.g. LABEL1:
- To use a quotation mark within a text string, precede it with
the special escape character "`" (ASCII 96); for example,
MESSAGE "She said `"Hello`".
Complete coverage of ASPECT is impossible within the scope of this
test drive, but all of the following commands are available and fully

Using External Protocols
PROCOMM PLUS includes internal support for a wide variety of file
transfer protocols. In addition, it provides "hooks" to allow you to
access external programs which support other protocols. Six hooks
are provided: three for uploading and three for downloading.
External protocol programs are specified within PROCOMM PLUS via the
Protocols Options section of the Setup facility. To add an external
protocol, enter the Setup facility by pressing [Alt-S] from PROCOMM
PLUS' terminal mode. Now press [P] to select protocol options.
Options A-F on the Protocol Options Menu are used to tell PROCOMM
PLUS what external programs to use. For example, to set up PROCOMM
PLUS to use ZMODEM as external protocol 1, enter ZMODEM-U as the
choice for uploading (option A) and ZMODEM-D for downloading (option
B). The names entered here will be displayed in the protocol
selection window after pressing PgUp or PgDn to transfer a file.
They will also be the programs called by PROCOMM PLUS to perform
those transfers.
When you select an external protocol from the protocol selection
window (choices 14-16) you will be prompted for parameters which are
passed along to the external program.
It is often convenient to use DOS .BAT files when specifying external
protocols. In the example above the actual program used to perform
ZMODEM up- and downloads is called DSZ.EXE1. DSZ accepts numerous
command options, most of which do not change between uses. By using
a batch file you spare yourself the trouble of entering the necessary
options each time you perform a ZMODEM transfer. For example,
ZMODEM-D refers to a batch file called ZMODEM-D.BAT. It contains the
following line:
DSZ rz C:\DL
This line calls DSZ and tells it to receive a file using ZMODEM (rz)
=================================================================
1DSZ is a user-supported program developed and supported by
Chuck Forsberg. It is available as DSZ.ARC on many BBS and on-
line services around the country. Non-registered users of DSZ
are granted a license to use the program for a limited evaluation
period. Regular use requires registration ($20.00 check) to:
Omen Technology Inc.
PO Box 4681
Portland, OR 97231
More information on DSZ may be found in DSZ.DOC, part of DSZ.ARC.
23
and create the file in the directory C:\DL. Since the filename is
passed from the sending system in ZMODEM transfers, you may just
press [Enter] at the parameters prompt.
Uploading is a little trickier, but not much. In that case you must
let DSZ know which file to upload. You can do that by specifying the
name of the file to upload when prompted by PROCOMM PLUS for ZMODEM-U
parameters. Whatever you enter is then passed to ZMODEM-U.BAT when
it is called. By including the line
DSZ sz %1
in ZMODEM-U.BAT, the filename is passed to DSZ via the %1 batch file
variable.
The 2 .BAT files and DSZ.EXE should be placed in a directory included
in your PATH.
The same techniques may be used for specifying other programs to call
for performing external protocol transfers.
24
Technical Support
Obviously we cannot offer technical support to the tens of thousands
of people trying PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE before they purchase.
However, when you purchase PROCOMM PLUS you will receive free
telephone support for up to 5 calls during a 90 day period that
starts when you make your first support call (you must have returned
your registration card to be eleigible for support). Additional
technical support may also be purchased to extend your 90 day free
period.
In addition to the telephone support you receive when you purchase
PROCOMM PLUS, DATASTORM has created a product support RoundTable on
GEnie, the General Electric Network for Information Exchange. The
RoundTable has been created as a means for DATASTORM's customers to
ask technical questions, download related and user supplied support
programs and files and share ideas with other users.
Subscribers to GEnie can access the DATASTORM ROUNDTABLE by entering
the command "DATASTORM" from GEnie's command prompt.
DATASTORM has also created a support forum on CIS, the CompuServe
Information Service. The support area at this time is a topic within
the PC Vendor Forum. To access the support area, enter "GO PCVEN" at
the CompuServe function prompt. Once within the PCVEN forum, enter
"SS 14" to select the DATASTORM support area. The DATSTORM support
area on CompuServe should be available around the first of October,
1988.

Appendix A: If You Have a Problem
This appendix contains information that can help you if you should
have a problem using PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE.
How to Start
1. Make sure your system meets the minimum requirements.
2. Make sure your computer, your modem, and the cables that
connect them are working properly.
3. Look for an answer to your problem in this manual
4. Make sure you are not running software that conflicts with
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE.
General Problems
- PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE' dialing facility (or the DIAL script
command) will dial a number ok but it doesn't realize when it has
made a connection. PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE times out, disconnects,
and begins to redial the number.
Make sure that PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE' modem result messages are
setup correctly. The connect messages (for available baud rates)
must be set to the string returned by the modem when it connects
at that particular baud rate. To find out what your modem is
returning, dial the number manually from terminal mode and examine
the modem's response. If the modem isn't returning anything make
sure a connection actually exists. If there is a connection, the
modem needs to be configured to return responses.
- Sometimes, when I dial a number from the dialing directory,
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE will disconnect immediately after I get a
connection and begin a redial.
One of two things is probably the case. See if you have a script
file linked to the dialing directory entry. If so, make sure you
aren't executing a DIAL command within the linked script file (use
IF NOT LINKED as discussed elsewhere).
Another less frequent cause is a timeout just as the connection is
being established. Either the modem or PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
could be timing-out and aborting the dial. PROCOMM PLUS TEST
DRIVE' timeout period can be changed by pressing the End key while
dialing or by changing the modem setup *wait for connection.) The
modem wait for timeout is probably set by a register (S7 for Hayes
compatible modems).
- The PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE hangup command [Alt-H] doesn't work.
27
The hangup command in the general modem setup must be set to a
string that will get your modem's attention and tell it to hangup.
The most common problem is that the string doesn't allow enough
time for the modem to "wake up". This can be remedied by
increasing the number ofpause characters in the hangup string (the
pause character is the tilde: ~). The other main reason why the
hangup function fails is that the escape character or hangup
command is invalid. The modem's escape code character (most modems
use the plus sign by default) can be set by register S2 for Hayes
compatible modems. The hangup command is ATH0 for Hayes compatible
modems. If your modem isn't fully Hayes compatible, you will need
to find out from your modem manual what the correct commands are.
- I sometimes have trouble opening files for logging or downloading.
That is, sometimes the download or log features don't seem to
work.
You may need to increase the FILES= parameter in your CONFIG.SYS
file. We suggest using at least FILES=25. Consult your DOS manual
for more details.
- Sometimes, when I'm bringing up one of PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE'
functions, I get an fmalloc error. And, when I'm done with the
function, the stuff that was on my screen is erased and PROCOMM
PLUS TEST DRIVE says it can't restore it.
Either you don't have enough memory (RAM) free or your memory has
been corrupted (by some program). When PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE
asks the operating system (DOS) for memory to save the screen, the
operating system is responding that the memory is unavailable.
Make sure your system meets PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE' minimum
memory requirement. If you have enough RAM, then eliminate any
software resident in memory (by rebooting your system) and see if
the problem persists. If the problem goes away, you know one of
your TSR's is "ill behaved" and you must then eliminate the
culprit by trial and elimination.
- I would like to see the commands I send to my modem. I see the
modem's response but not what I type (I'm using Full duplex).
You will need to give your modem the command to turn echoing on.
The Hayes command is ATE1.
- I'm having trouble getting PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE to work with my
PCjr. Any ideas?
The PCjr is somewhat different in the way it handles
communications. Several solutions to the problems unique to the
PCjr can be obtained bycalling our BBS and downloading a file
called PROCOMJR.ARC. This file includes several suggestions for
making PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE and the PCjr work together.
- When I call online systems like CompuServe or the Source via
Telenet, I get nothing but garbage characters on my screen.
28
When using public networks such as Telenet or Tymnet, you must
either call in at E/7/1 (even parity, 7 data and 1 stop bits), or
strip the high bit off each incoming character using the
translation table.
- When I try to run Host Mode it always thinks that somebody is
online; that is, it will automatically go to the "First Name:"
prompt.
First, make sure you don't have the connection type set to DIRECT.
Then, you must set your modem so that it does not force carrier
detect (CD) high, or true. This is usually controlled by a DIP
switch on your modem. For example, on a Hayes external modem, set
DIP switch 6 to the up position.
- I'm trying to get two computers running PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE to
talk to each other using a direct connection. What do I do?
You need to connect the two machines using a null modem cable. A
null modem cable has the usual configuration for a serial port to
modem connection, with the exception that pins 2 and 3 must be
crossed. That is pin 2 on one end needs to go to pin 3 on the
other, and vice versa. Then make sure that each side is using the
same line parameters. You should be able to talk back and forth
between the machines while in terminal, or chat modes. You may
even run Host Mode on one machine; just remember to set the
Connection Type option in the Host Mode Setup area to Direct.
- PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE doesn't work with the NeoClone modem that
I bought at a garage sale in Taiwan. Why not?
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE, by default, is set for use with Hayes
compatible modems. If your modem is not truly Hayes compatible,
you will have to changesome of the Setup Options, especially the
MODEM INITIALIZATION string and the MODEM DIAL command, to values
correct for your modem. This may entail a little digging in your
modem manual. User groups and local bulletin boards may be able to
provide information on using your particular brand of modem.
- When I download a file using a protocol like XMODEM, the file
contains extra stuff at the end.
XMODEM (and its many variations) sends a file in blocks which are
all of equal length. The last block sent will almost always
contain pad characters which are added to fill out the block. A
file will contain no extra characters only if it is an exact
multiple of the block size.
- I lose random characters when communicating with just about any
other system. I cannot download files at all.
Some memory resident programs steal too much of the CPU to work
with an asynchronous download. The offenders are often clock
programs which either display a clock on screen or work with add
on system clocks, or programs using expanded or enhanced memory.
29
Try rebooting your system without any of these programs or drivers
installed and then execute PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE. (The DOS
supplied drivers, ANSI and VDISK, work fine as do most popular
commercial programs like SIDEKICK, SUPERKEY, etc.)
- I can't download--I always get a message "File Creation Error."
If you have setup a default download directory, then make sure
that the directory is valid. Make sure you have FILES=25 (or more)
in your CONFIG.SYS. Make sure hidden or read-only files of the
same name don't exist in the download directory.
- I don't see a Status line (or other major screen) when I'm in
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE.
Exit to DOS and execute PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE with the /B
option. If this works, you can enter the colors section of the
setup facility and save the changes (so the /B option is no longer
needed).
- PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE messes up my DOS environment. When I go
into the DOS gateway and enter the SET command, my environment is
displayed with garbage in it.
This is normal. The compiler uses the environment to store
information but it is restored after the EXIT command is entered.
- PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE keeps resetting my baud rate to 300 when
connecting to other systems (or when using Host mode).
You are using automatic baud detection but your modem result
messages aren't specified correctly. Either turn off auto baud
detect or add the command that activates modem extended result
codes to your init string.

Note: When you first start PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE after installing
it, the PCPLUS.PRM, PCPLUS.DIR, PCPLUS.KEY, and PCPLUS.XLT files are
created. When you start PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE at later times,
PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE looks for these files first in the current
directory and then (if it doesn't find them in the current directory)
in the directory that's specified with the SET PCPLUS= command in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Appendix C: Translating Control Codes
In communications, there are a number of operations that are
represented by "control codes". In PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE, most
control codes are represented by the character ^ (caret) followed by
a letter. Control codes occur in two types of situations:
- In data you send to a remote computer.
- In commands PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE sends to the modem. For
example, the GENERAL OPTIONS set of specifications in the Setup
facility includes the specification for the dialing-command
suffix. This is ^M for most Hayes-compatible modems, because ^M is
translated as a carriage return, which is what most modems expect
at the end of a dialing command.
Other commands that typically include control codes are the modem
initialization string, the hang-up command, and the auto-answer
command.
Here are the control codes you'll most likely need:
^H Backspace
^J Line feed
^L Form feed
^M Carriage return
^[ Escape character
For example, if you want the data you're sending to a remote computer
to continue at the beginning of the next line on the remote
computer's screen, you would include ^M^J in the command.
Control codes are also useful for macros and script files that
automate telecommunications operations with CompuServe and many BBS
systems, which use control codes such as ^C, and ^K for aborting
commands. If you're creating a script file that needs to do such an
operation, you can include the appropriate control code in a script
file TRANSMIT command.
There's one code that's not exactly a control code, but which
functions in a similar way. PROCOMM PLUS TEST DRIVE translates the
character ~ (tilde) into a half-second pause. This code is used in
both the modem hang-up command and the modem auto answer command.
33

ANSI X3.64
This is the recommended emulation for use with bulletin board systems
that use ANSI graphics and color. The ANSI emulation processes the
ANSI codes given in the DOS technical reference manual, and behaves
in the same manner as the DOS 3.x ANSI.SYS device driver. (PROCOMM
PLUS TEST DRIVE does not use the ANSI.SYS driver itself). This
emulation is similar to the VT102 emulation in function, but the
VT102 emulation handles display attributes in a slightly different
manner.
