  3.         This file contains hints and solutions for the "riddles" that
  4. are to be found in The Elder Scrolls: Arena, made by Bethseda Softworks.
  5. This file was assembled in an ad hoc fashion, and is as accurate as I
  6. have been able to ascertain as of 21 May 1994. I myself am currently
  7. roughly in the middle of the game; these contents will be maintained and
  8. updated by me as required. The solutions should be valid for all
  9. currently available game versions (1.0 through 1.05). My thanks go out
  10. to =Bandit=(tm), James D. Hudnall and BigBad MaMa for their assistance
  11. in this endeavour.

  13.         If anyone should determine that I have omitted information, or
  14. have included mis-information, I request that they contact me
  15. IMMEDIATELY through CIS to help rectify my error.

  17.         Although Arena is a splendid game in many ways, the inclusion of
  18. "riddles" has proven to be a bane to many of the players, myself
  19. included. The CIS Gamers Forum has provided excellent support for such
  20. gamers; this file is intended to relieve some of that on-going burden.
  21. Gamers request help in forms of varying broadness, ranging from the
  22. "Give me a nudge in the right direction" to "Please, just tell me the
  23. answer". To respect the desires of the "nudgers", I worked out what I
  24. hope to be a simple scheme to present the info without spoiling the fun
  25. for those who just need their shoulders to be aimed in the right direction.

  27.         Basically, I have taken all game-specific information and
  28. embedded it into a format that looks like this: mn-XXXXXXXXX
  29. where "m" is the position of the first letter, "n" is the last letter,
  30. and XXXXXXXXX is a string of quasi-random letters. For the "info"
  31. itself, I inserted the letter *before* each letter of the correct answer
  32. (e.g. dog -> cnf). So, e.g. "dog" might be 35-RNCNFUDMX, *or also*
  33. 57-NDHFCNFST (i.e. fifth through seventh letters: c->d, n->o, f->g: dog).
  34. I'm hoping to present what amounts to a "three-level hint":
  35.         1) just the length (e.g. 35 and 57 both indicate 3 letters)
  36.         2) just the first letter (c->d) of the word
  37.         3) or of course the entire word
  38.  
  39.         One has to stop and think at each stage of the decoding (e.g. 35
  40. is three letters, but 5-3=2 <g>), so one should be able to actually
  41. stare at the entire page of information and not "accidently see"
  42. anything at all. However, one should still be able to quickly get the
  43. specific desired info. For a numeric answer I've used all numbers: e.g.
  44. 36-630883211 is this year. Lastly, I've inserted Z for A, and 9 for 0.

  46.         Remember: I have gone "backward" one letter/number; decode by
  47. going "forward". Last e.g.; Arena might be: 59-NDYRZQDMZ (5 thru 9)

  51.         In Arena, the Staff piece acquisition is totally linear. All
  52. known riddles are associated with acquiring Staff pieces, and all Staff
  53. pieces have two dungeons associated with them, a preliminary (pre-) and
  54. a final location. I've grouped all information by Staff piece number
  55. rather than location name (which I've included "encoded"):
