Time To Get Serious!
--------------------
I have been programming the Amiga in 'C' for about a year now, mostly on
my own, using three sources of information when I had problems or needed
technical information:
1. Public Domain software (What would I do without it?!)
2. The Amiga Reference Manuals (Rom Kernal, Intuition & Exec) which are a
good help for the most part, but are now dated (we are STILL at Rel 1.1!)
and are strewn with errors. (Come on Commodore, when are the new verions
appearing for V1.3 of the OS?)
3. The Lattice C Compiler manual and two 'C' books I have.
Unfortunately, there are times when this is not enough and I have lost count
of the times I have wished there was someone I could get in touch with for
some help, whether it be someone who has tried the same thing, has seen an
example somewhere or just to talk about it and get a fresh perspective.
Since I have seen a few names pop up on the odd PD disk that I recognise
as Kiwi's, I am obviously not the only one out there writing software instead
of destroying aliens and battling with buggy word-processors!
So, I propose we start up a regular developers column in the newsletter
(and on the disk) where we can ask questions, review software (languages,
compilers & utilities) and submit code to. I am willing to be the
coordinator but so I know I am not wasting my time I would first like to
get some response from you lot currently reading this! If you are into
development and you are interested in a regular Developer's corner or
perhaps just a list of people who are willing to give advice and help to
each other in times of difficulty, then let me know!
At this stage I am using 'C' 100% so I am not clued up in Assembly, Modula,
or Fortran etc, but the more the merrier! Quite often I have found the
programming language to be unimportant when trying to solve a problem as
the Amiga is very consistent across a wide variety of languages.
Anyway, if you are a 68000 Guru, a complete novice or somewhere in between,
(like me!) then I would love to hear from you with any suggestions you may
have for a developers group.
