Version 2.0 - Shareware
© 1992 Mike Fuller
INTRODUCTION
CONVERT is a programme that provides the means to easily convert numerical
values between international, imperial and US systems of measurement.
It does this in twelve different fields of measurement including area,
capacity, density, energy, fuel consumption, length, power, pressure,
speed (velocity), temperature, volume and weight.
CONVERT is so easy to use that you may never need to read this doc file
but I have made it comprehensive for the benefit of everybody.
This is the freely distributable version which does not have the ARexx port
or any startup options and displays an
About
notice when CONVERT is
started and closed. This version may be distributed freely as long as this
doc file is included and a reasonable (ie. not more than AUD $5) copying fee
is charged for the disk. It may not be included on any commercial disk
except where I give express permission. (Fred Fish has that permission)
This version is still shareware, so if you use it regularly you are
legally and morally obliged to register as a user and receive the resulting
benefits.
See below for details about obtaining the registered version.
USING CONVERT
Installing CONVERT is simply a matter of dragging its icon into your
preferred directory. There are no additional files required.
To start the programme, simply double-click on the CONVERT icon.
For CLI or shell users, run CONVERT, either after CD'ing to its parent
directory or by providing a full path. (eg.
run df1:Convert/Convert
)
An
About
window will be displayed initially; after reading the message
carefully, just click on this window to remove it.
NOTE:
The registered version has several startup options not available in
this version, including allowing you to start the program in an iconised
form and setting the positions of the windows. The annoying but necessary
About
notice will also be missing.
CONVERT has been designed to be as flexible and easy to use as possible.
You can operate CONVERT using the mouse, the keyboard or any combination
of both. The registered version also has an
ARexx
port for batch or
interactive processing from a shell or another ARexx compatable programme.
The main window displays a numeric keyboard, twelve measuring-system
gadgets (buttons) and a set of string gadgets (boxes) with accompanying
descriptive text. The current measuring-system gadget will be hilighted
as will the current string gadget (by its different coloured text).
To select a different measuring-system unit, simply click on the relevant
button. Alternatively, you may select a unit by pressing the keyboard-
equivalent letter for that unit. Each unit has a hilighted letter to
indicate its keyboard-eqivalent. eg. press
c
to select
C
apacity,
r
to select P
r
essure etc.
To select a different string gadget, click in the relevant box.
Alternatively, you may cycle through the string gadgets by pressing the
up or down cursor (arrow) keys.
NOTE:
When a string gadget is active (indicated by the visible cursor
in the current gadget), the keyboard equivalents for selecting
units or changing string gadgets will not work. (Its obvious why
if you think about it) To enable keyboard control (ie. deactivate
the string gadget) simply press the
Return
key. To reactivate
the string gadget, press
Return
again.
To enter a number, click on the numbers on the window's keyboard or use
the real keyboard's numeric keys (the string gadget must be active to
enter numbers via the real keyboard). To convert the number, either click
on the window's
Enter
button or press the
Return
key on the real keyboard.
To clear the numbers, click on the
CA
button on the window's keyboard.
The real keyboard equivalent is the
Del
(delete) key.
To iconise the window, click on the Zoom gadget (the small titlebar gadget
just to the left of the Depth gadget). The keyboard equivalent is
A
-I
(Hold down the Right Amiga key and press the
I
key). This is a toggle
function, so to return to the main CONVERT window, repeat the action.
NOTE:
This is not available in this version for those using the 1.2 or
1.3 operating system, but registered users will get 2.0 and 1.3 versions
which will both have this function.
To quit CONVERT, click the CloseWindow gadget on the left side of the
titlebar or press
A
-Q
(Right Amiga - Q)
The
About
notice will be displayed for a set time (allowing you to
reread the important message) and then the program will close.
ACCURACY OF COMPUTATION
The unit values are stored internally with an accuracy of up to ten
significant digits and all computations are done in double-precision to
ensure the maximum accuracy of conversion. Many scientific sources were
researched to get the most accurate values and the program has been
tested thoroughly to give you the best results possible.
Very large or very small absolute values are displayed in exponential
format, which allows the most significant digits to be displayed and still
retain accuracy of size. For those people not familiar with this format,
only the more significant digits are displayed along with an exponent.
This exponent indicates to what power of 10 the number should be multiplied
by to get its approximate value and is indicated by an
e
followed by
a
+
or
-
sign and a number. As an example, the number 123000000000
is actually 1.23 times 100000000000 (10 to the 11th power) and would be
shown as
1.23e+11
which is certainly easier to type in. Try entering
1.23e+99 in normal form!
Similarly, a very small absolute value like 0.000000000000056 is actually
5.6 times 0.00000000000001 (10 to the minus 14th power or 1/10 to the 14th)
and would be shown as
5.6e-14
You may enter values in the string gadgets in exponential format if you
wish (Don't forget to include the + or - sign after the e).
DISCLAIMER & BUGS
Although this product has been tested thoroughly for accuracy and function,
NO liability can be accepted by me for any damage or loss incurred whilst
using CONVERT. If you find any problem, however, I would appreciate being
told about it.
COPYRIGHT
CONVERT is Copyright © Mike Fuller 1992, with all rights reserved.
This freely-disributable version is
shareware
, so if you use it for more
than just trying out the programme, you are legally and morally obliged to
pay me for the fully registered version.
REGISTRATION
To register as a user of CONVERT, send $20.00 (Australian) to the address
below. ($20 AUD is equivalent to less than $14 US or £9 UK at the time of
writing, which makes it a very cheap programme.) This will entitle you to
a disk with the fully functional CONVERT programme, including the ARexx
port, startup-options, full documentation and no
About
notice to annoy
you. The registered version, despite the extra functionality, is actually
over 5K smaller than this version. As a bonus, you will also get several
of my other programmes on the disk.
If you wish a different measuring-system field as a replacement to one
already in the programme, send an additional $10 AUD and I will try very
hard to give you this. Of course, your $10 will be refunded if it is
unsatisfactory. Don't forget to specify which field (density, temp etc.)
is to be replaced.
The money should be either cash (in any currency) or an Australian bank
cheque. Do not send cheques from banks of other countries; it costs a
fortune to cash them here. Please post to:

If you wish to discuss the programme, or anything else, please phone me on

reasonable
time. (Overseas people will need to add the
ISD code of course)
