  82. __ WINDOWS INSTALLATION___________________________
  83.  
  84. The installer will usually run automatically once the CD-ROM is 
  85. inserted into your drive.  If it does not run, either of the following 
  86. methods will activate installer:
  87.  
  88. I.
  89.   1. Insert the CD-ROM into the drive.
  90.   2. Double click on your CD-ROM drive which will say "Joy" 
  91.       (usually drive is letter "D")
  92.   3. Follow the prompts.
  93.  
  94. II.
  95.   1. Insert the CD-ROM into the drive.
  96.   2. Select the "Start" button.
  97.   3. Choose Run from the Start Menu.
  98.   4. At the Open box, type "D:.exe", where D is 
  99.      the letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  100.   5. Click on OK and follow the prompts.
  101.  
  102. Note: Double click on PilotHelp.txt for information on how to install and use the Pilot-compatible portion of this program.

  105. __STARTING THE PROGRAM_________________
  106.  
  107.   From the Start button, select:
  108.   Programs > Joy of Cooking > Joy of Cooking (exe)
  109.  
  110. Note: The folder will be named "Joy of Cooking" UNLESS it was renamed during installation.
  111.  
  112. The CD-ROM must be in the drive for the program to run.
  113.  
  114.  
  115. __ TO UNINSTALL_______________________________________________
  116.  
  117.   From the Start button, select:
  118.   Programs > Joy of Cooking > Uninstall
  119.  
  120.  
  121. __REINSTALLING?_______________________________________
  122.  
  123. If for some reason you need to re-install the program from 
  124. the CD, and you want to preserve the recipes, menus or shopping 
  125. lists you've created or your preferences such as bookmarks and
  126. the information in the customize screen, you will need to save the 
  127. following files into another folder and then copy them back into the 
  128. newly installed Joy of Cooking folder. Do not change their names:

  157. (The * means that several files with different extensions may have 
  158. this name and should be copied.)

  160. NOTE: Reinstalling is not recommended, unless absolutely
  161. necessary.  If JOY OF COOKING is not running
  162. properly, please try the troubleshooting measures listed below
  163. or call tech support.  Copying your customized files over may
  164. bring the problem you were attempting to solve with you.

  167. __IN GENERAL_______________________________________________
  168.  
  169. Please do not change the name or relative location
  170. of any of the program files on your hard drive, although 
  171. the Joy of Cooking folder may be located anywhere.
  172.  
  173. The fixed image size of JOY OF COOKING is 640x480, although the "info" windows can be 
  174. dragged anywhere.The preferred color depth setting is thousands of colors.
  175.  
  176. Having other applications open while JOY OF COOKING is running can cause poor performance. 
  177. We highly recommend quitting any other program, turning off networking if not needed, and 
  178. disabling other unnecessary system extensions.
  179.  
  180.  
  181. 3. Troubleshooting----------------------------------
  182.  
  183. If the program is very slow____________
  184. 1. Close any unnecessary applications that may be running.
  185. 2. Make sure your display setting is at 640x480 resolution or higher and 
  186. thousands of colors. Refer to your system or Windows documentation for how to do this. 
  187.  
  188. If display problems occur______________
  189. If you experience graphics problems while running the program, contact your video card 
  190. or system vendor to obtain the latest version of their video driver.
  191.  
  192. If sound problems occur________________
  193. If you experience sound problems while running the program, contact your sound card or 
  194. system vendor to obtain the latest version of their sound driver.
  195. NOTE: JOY OF COOKING contains only sparse sounds for button clicks.
  196.  
  197. Screen savers__________________________
  198. If you are running a screen saver in the background and experience video and sound problems 
  199. during the program, disable the screen saver and the problem should be resolved. Refer to 
  200. your screen saver documentation on how to disable the screen saver.
  201.  
  202. Windows 95 Taskbar_____________________
  203. The Windows 95 Taskbar may interfere with the user's ability to view the program graphics, 
  204. animations and program information in certain activities. If you encounter difficulties when 
  205. the Windows 95  Taskbar appears on-screen, enable the Taskbar's Autohide feature:
  206.  
  207. *   Click the Start button, then select Settings, then Taskbar.
  208. *   At the dialog box that appears, uncheck 'Always on top' and check 'Auto hide'.
  209. *   Click the 'Apply' button, then the 'OK' button.
  210.  
  211. You also have the option of relocating the Taskbar to different sides of the display screen:
  212.  
  213. *   Click and hold down the mouse pointer on a blank area of the Taskbar.
  214. *   Drag and release the Taskbar on the side of the screen where it causes the least 
  215.     interference.
  216.  
  217. NOTE: If you need to access the Taskbar or the Start menu at any time while the program 
  218.       is running, press CTRL+ESC. To return to the program, click on the program's display 
  219.       area, or press ALT+TAB until the program's icon is selected.
  220.  
  221. Improving system performance (Win95)____
  222.  
  223.   1. Right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop, then click Properties.
  224.   2. From the dialog box, select the Performance tab.
  225.   3. Click the File System button.
  226.   4. Select the CD-ROM tab. Set the Supplemental cache size to Large.
  227.   5. Match the Optimize access pattern setting to that of your CD-ROM. (It should 
  228.       be set to Double-speed or higher.)
  229.   6. Click Apply, then OK. 
  230.   7. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

  241. Video drivers and system settings (Win95)_________
  242.  
  243. Information about your system's video drivers can often assist our Technical 
  244. Support staff in diagnosing problems that are encountered when running the 
  245. program.
  246.  
  247. To get information about your system's video drivers:
  248. 1. Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.
  249. 2. Click on the Device Manager tab.
  250. 3. Double-click on Display adapters.
  251.  
  252. Device Manager also displays settings for hardware devices that are not fully supported 
  253. by Windows 95 or are using device drivers that need to be updated. 
  254.  
  255. Contact the system vendor or manufacturer if any subkeys, such as those under 
  256. 'Display adapters' or 'Sound, video and game controllers' are displayed with a red X 
  257. or yellow exclamation mark.(Click the plus [+] sign to see the subkey.)
  258.  
  259. Your Windows Configuration Information____________

  261. Please have the following information ready if and when you call:

  263. 1. The product name and version number located at the top of this ReadMe file.
  264. 2. The processor and clock speed of your computer (e.g., 486/66).
  265. 3. The brand name of the sound device installed in the computer.
  266. 4. The amount of free memory (memory available to run the program) that the computer has. 
  267.    (Open Explorer on the desktop and select About Windows 95 from the Help menu.) From the 
  268.    dialog box that appears, write down the Memory and System Resources values.
  269. 5. The complete and exact error message reported by the program (if any).
