ocr: KIMBERLEY HIS DIAMOND MINE at Kimberley, South Africa, opened in 1871. Initially, land was set aside to be mined by individuals or groups in 2.3 m (71/2 ft) strips. These narrow bands were dug out SO steeply that the roads between the excavations crumbled away. Today at Kimberley diamonds are extracted from underground mines. The diamond-bearing rock "kimberlite" is named after the Kimberley region. KIMBERLEY MINE, 1877 These ropes were used to haul diamonds from the mine.
