EMD Prototype Application Instructions
To start the application, make sure that a mouse is connected
and that the mouse driver is installed, and then, at the DOS
prompt, type "emdap" for an EGA display or "emdap vga" for VGA
displays.
A startup message will appear. When "Press any key to
continue" appears at the bottom, press a key. The initial
map display will be drawn, and a menu bar will be displayed
at the top of the screen.
Functions are invoked by making menu choices using the mouse
and the left mouse button. Place the cursor on the menu
title ("Layers", for example), and press and hold the left
mouse button. Moving the mouse up and down will highlight
different menu selections. Releasing the left button while a
selection is highlighted will select that function.
If the button is released while the cursor is not on a menu
choice, no function will be selected.
Some map functions are accessed using the left mouse button
while the cursor is over the map area. Pressing and holding
the left mouse button will cause a menu to appear at the
cursor location. Functions may then be highlighted and
selected in the same way as with the other menus. These
map functions will use the cursor position to perform there
function (for example "Zoom In" will use the cursor position
for the center of the zoomed image).
Some functions use addition windows which include buttons
(yellow rectangles), check boxes (square black outlines) or
text areas (rectangle black outlines with block cursor).
Buttons and check boxes are activated by placing the cursor
inside the rectangle and pressing and releasing the left
mouse button. To enter text in a text area, first activate
it in the same way as a button or check box. The block
cursor will appear in the area. Next, the desired text is
typed. The backspace key can be used to correct errors.
The menu functions are briefly described below.
The "Display" Menu includes the following choices:
Pan Left, Pan Right, Pan Up, Pan Down - These choices cause
the map display to be "panned" (more map is shown) in the
given direction.
Center Point - This selection will open a window which allows
the user to enter a latitude and longitude. The format is
ddd mm ssh, where ddd is degrees, mm is minutes, ss is
seconds, and h is either 'N' or 'S' for latitude or 'E' or
'W' for longitude. If the "Redraw" button is clicked, the
map display will be redrawn with the specified coordinate in
the center of the screen. If "Cancel" is clicked, nothing
will be changed.
Exit - After asking for confirmation, the application will
exit.
The "Layers" Menu will contain a choice for each layer in the
map. If a layer is selected, a window will appear. The color
and pattern used to draw that layer may be changed by using
the "Color" and "Pattern" check boxes. The layer can be
turned on or off by using the On/Off check boxes. After
making changes, the "Save Changes" button must be pressed
to use the changes. The "Close" button closes the window,
and redraws the map if any changes were made.
The changes are not permanent, and the default choices will
return the next time the application runs.
Note that the box must be closed before other functions
can be selected.
The "Info" menu contains the following selections:
Cursor Tracking - This will open a window which will display
the latitude and longitude of the pixel under the cursor,
as well as the elevation of that point. The box may be moved
by pressing the left button while the cursor is in the black
area at the top of the window, and selecting "move" from the
menu which appears. The box may be closed by clicking the
"Close" button.
Note that other functions may be selected while the tracking
window remains open.
Point to point line of sight - A line of sight profile can be
generated between a starting point and an ending point.
The starting point is selected by clicking the left mouse
button at the desired position on the map. The coordinate
will appear in the "From" text area. The "To" coordinate
is selected the same way using the right mouse button.
Pressing the "LOS" button will generate the profile. The
function can be repeated with different end points as many
times as desired. The window must be closed before other
functions may be selected.
Radial line of sight - A line of sight "Fan" can be generated
by choosing a center point, using the left mouse button, and
a radius, using the right mouse button. The direction and
width can be entered in the corresponding text areas. The
"Fan" is drawn on the map. Red indicates no line of sight
from origin, while green indicates that there is line of
sight.
The window must be closed before other functions may be
selected.
Range circle - The center point is selected with the left mouse
button. The radius can be set with the right mouse button,
or by entering it into the text area. Pressing "Draw" will
draw a circle of the given radius on the map.
The window must be closed before other functions can be
selected.
The "Map" menu may be accessed by pressing and holding the
left mouse button in the map area, while no windows (except
the menu bar or the tracking window) are open. The map menu
contains the following functions:
Center Map - The map will be redrawn. The map coordinate at
the current cursor position will become the new center point.
Zoom In - The map will be redraw at a larger scale. The
current cursor position will become the new center point.
If the map is already at the largest scale, this choice will
be gray and may not be chosen.
Zoom Out - The map will be redraw at a smaller scale.
If the map is already at the smallest scale, this choice will
be gray and may not be chosen.
