  3. DATA DESCRIPTION
  4.  
  5.     ETL.IMG is a 24 bit scanned image of the Engineer Topographic
  6. Laboratories at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.  The image was created
  7. using ETL's Image Digitizing System (IDS) from an original film
  8. positive NAPP 1:40,000 color I.R. image.  RGB filters were used to
  9. break the image into its four seperate spectral components (green,
  10. red, and infrared).  
  11.     The IDS uses a CCD array to scan imagery down to resolutions
  12. as fine as 7.5 microns.  ETL.IMG was scanned at 30 microns and has
  13. a resolution of 850 dots per inch.  This translates to a ground
  14. resolution of approximately 1.7 meters/pixel.  The IDS is a
  15. photogrammetrically precise instrument as well as an image
  16. processor.  Image orientation may be measured on the system and
  17. enhancements can be made to imagery and written out as a 'new'
  18. image file.
