  4. The following document details the virus definition update procedures
  5. for:
  6.  
  7. * Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95
  8. * Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows 95
  9. * Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.1
  10. * Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  11. * Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and NT Tools

  17. TIP: Be aware that there are now three different versions of
  18. Intelligent Updater with different filenames!  Read the section below
  19. for more details.  If you are receiving this update on a multi-disk
  20. version of Intelligent Updater, the program files for Intelligent
  21. Updater 1.6 are located on disk one, and on disk three for
  22. Intelligent Updater 4.0.  All other update files are located on disk
  23. two.

  27. Intelligent Updater
  28. =====================================================================
  29.  
  30. As part of our continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer
  31. viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called Intelligent
  32. Updater to simplify virus definition file updates.  Intelligent
  33. Updater locates Norton AntiVirus on your computer and installs new
  34. virus definition files automatically.  All you have to do is run the
  35. program, then scan your disk with Norton AntiVirus.  Later sections
  36. of this document give step-by-step instructions for each Norton
  37. AntiVirus version.
  38.  
  39. There are now three versions of Intelligent Updater.  The newest one
  40. is Intelligent Updater 4.0, used to deliver virus definitions for NAV
  41. 4.0 running on Windows 95 and NT.  The program name, which changes
  42. from month to month, uses the following form:
  43.  
  44.     mmAIyyll.EXE, where mm is the month, yy is the year and ll is the
  45.                   language.
  46.  
  47. Intelligent Updater 1.6 is for all other versions of NAV.  It is
  48. named with the form:
  49.  
  50.     mmAVyyll.EXE, where mm is the month, yy is the year and ll is the
  51.                   language.
  52.  
  53. Intelligent Updater is also released on a set of three floppies.  The
  54. program file for Intelligent Updater 1.6 is located on your virus
  55. definitions update disk one.  The program name, which also changes
  56. from month to month, uses the following form:
  57.  
  58.     mmDSyy.EXE, where mm is the month, yy is the year and ll is the
  59.                 language.
  60.  
  61. Disk two contains the remaining files for Intelligent Updater 1.6
  62. that could not fit on disk one.  Disk three contains Intelligent
  63. Updater 4.0, with the same name as the downloaded version, currently
  64. named 11AI97EN.EXE.
  65.  
  66. For example, 11AI97EN.EXE is the name of the latest Intelligent
  67. Updater 4.0 definitions update for NAV 4.0 for Windows 95, NT
  68. Workstation, and NT Server.  11DS97EN.EXE is the Intelligent Updater
  69. 1.6 definitions update that is distributed on floppies for all other
  70. versions of NAV.  11AV97EN.EXE is Intelligent Updater 1.6 for download
  71. distribution, which is too large to fit on one floppy.  11DS97EN.EXE
  72. is also available for download, to allow flexibility in updating many
  73. computers at one site.

  77. Norton AntiVirus 1.0 and 2.0 for Windows 95
  78. =====================================================================
  79.  
  80. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 1.6, named
  81. 11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE.
  82.  
  83. Important Notice: If your HELP/ABOUT NORTON ANTIVIRUS menu option
  84. does not say Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 version 2.0.1, you
  85. should update it using the NAV 2.01 patch.  This latest adds password
  86. protection to the Options dialog box and adds network alerting from
  87. AutoProtect and the virus scanner.  As viruses continue to be
  88. discovered with alarming regularity, the NAV virus definition files
  89. have grown in size to counter the latest threats.  Applying this
  90. patch will ensure that your installation will continue to accept of
  91. versions the latest (and largest) virus definition files.  Using
  92. older versions of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 can cause false
  93. detections when the new virus definitions are installed.  This latest
  94. patch also adds support for Microsoft Service Pack 2 (FAT 32/large
  95. volumes) and will be required to apply all current definition sets.
  96.  
  97. Please download this file to a temporary directory and execute it to
  98. extract the necessary files.  Then click Setup to begin the
  99. installation process.  After applying this patch, you must also
  100. update your virus definition set.
  101. This patch is available for download from the Symantec BBS, the
  102. Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, or America Online.  You can
  103. also call Customer Service at one of the numbers noted at the end 
  104. of this document to order a disk set.

  106. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definition files:
  107. ---------------------------------------------------------------------

  109. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
  110.    Updater program (11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE).
  111.    For example, your A: drive.
  112. 2. Double-click (launch) the file 11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE.
  113. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  114. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  Before you reboot
  115.    your computer, you must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning your
  116.    drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical
  117.    files.
  118. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  119.    definitions.

  123. Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows 95
  124. =====================================================================

  126. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 4.0, named
  127. 11AI97EN.EXE.  Other versions of the Intelligent Updater will not work
  128. with NAV 4.0 for Windows 95.

  130. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definition files:

  145. Norton AntiVirus 3.0 and 4.0 for DOS / Windows 3.1

  148. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 1.6, named
  149. 11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE.

  151. Important Notice: If your version is dated before June 1, 1996
  152. (NAV.EXE, NAVW.EXE), you should update it using this Engine Update
  153. (UPDATEME.EXE).  As viruses continue to be discovered with alarming
  154. regularity, the NAV virus definition files have grown in size to
  155. counter the latest threats.  Applying this patch will ensure that
  156. your installation will continue to accept the latest (and largest)
  157. virus definition files.  Using older versions of Norton AntiVirus can
  158. cause false detections when the new virus definitions are installed.
  159. This patch is required to apply virus definition sets dated August
  160. 1997 or later.
  161.  
  162. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program, download
  163. the file named UPDATEME.EXE.  Place the file in an empty directory
  164. and execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents.  Step-by-step
  165. instructions are included in the READ.ME file.
  166.  
  167. The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set.  You
  168. must apply the latest virus definition set update (for example,
  169. 11AV97EN.EXE) after completing the program update.
  170.  
  171. UPDATEME.EXE is located where the monthly virus definition files
  172. updates are normally found.  It is available for download from the
  173. Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, or America
  174. Online.  You can also call Customer Service at at one of the numbers 
  175. noted at the end of this document to order a disk set.
  176.  
  177. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 or 4.0 virus definition files, use one
  178. of the following procedures.  Users with the Windows 3.1 version of
  179. NAV can use either procedure to update both the DOS and Windows
  180. components of their definitions.
  181.  
  182. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0/4.0 virus definition files from
  183. Windows:
  184. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  185.  
  186. 1. Go to (select) the directory or drive where you have the
  187.    Intelligent Updater program (11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE).
  188.    For example, your A: drive.
  189. 2. Double-click on the file 11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE.
  190. 3. Follow the on screen instructions.
  191. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  Before you reboot
  192.    your computer, you must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning your
  193.    drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical
  194.    files.
  195. 5. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  196.    definitions as well.
  197.  
  198. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0/4.0 virus definition files from DOS:
  199. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  200.  
  201. 1. Exit Windows entirely.
  202.    For example, from within Windows, select EXIT from the File menu.
  203. 2. Change to the directory or drive where you have the Intelligent
  204.    Updater program (11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE).
  205.    For example, type A: at the C:\ prompt.
  206. 3. From the DOS prompt, type 11AV97EN.EXE (or 11DS97EN.EXE) and press
  207.    Enter.
  208. 4. Follow the instructions on screen.
  209. 5. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  Before you reboot
  210.    your computer, you must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning your
  211.    drive activates the new virus definitions and rebuilds critical
  212.    files.
  213. 6. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new
  214.    definitions as well.

  218. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  219. =====================================================================
  220.  
  221. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 1.6, named
  222. 11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE.
  223.  
  224. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  225. (NAVNET.EXE) is dated before June 1, 1996, you must upgrade your
  226. software before updating the virus definition files.  Using an older
  227. version of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager with the new virus
  228. definitions may generate false alarms.
  229.  
  230. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program (quick
  231. instructions):
  232. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  233.  
  234. Detailed, step-by-step instructions are included in the READ.ME file.
  235.  
  236. The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set.  You
  237. must apply the latest virus definition set update (for example,
  238. 11DS97EN.EXE) after completing the program update.

  240. 1. Download the file named UPDATEME.EXE to an empty directory.

  247. 2. Copy NAVNET.EXE and NAVNETW.EXE to your local NAV directory.
  248.    NAVNET.EXE or NAVNETW.EXE must be in the NAV directory or path or
  249.    only the standalone files will be extracted.
  250. 3. Execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents.
  251.  
  252. After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, you must do the
  253. following:
  254.  
  255. 1. Delete all VIRSP*.DAT files from the Norton AntiVirus Network
  256.    Manager directory.
  257. 2. Recreate your .NNS files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template.
  258.    For information on how to recreate .NNS files, order FaxBack #4290
  259.    from our free FaxBack service at (541) 984-2490, option 2.
  260. 3. Update your virus definition set (detailed instructions below).
  261.  
  262. The NAV 3.11 patch contains the April 1997 virus definition set.  You
  263. must apply the latest virus definition set update (for example,
  264. 11AV97EN.EXE) after completing the program update.
  265.  
  266. To update Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definition files:
  267. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  268.  
  269. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  270.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program (11AV97EN.EXE
  271.    or 11DS97EN.EXE).
  272. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton
  273.    AntiVirus Network Manager is installed.
  274. 3. You must have READ and WRITE access to the mapped drive.
  275. 4. From a DOS prompt, type 11AV97EN.EXE (or 11DS97EN.EXE) [path] and
  276.    press Enter.
  277.    [path] is the location mapped in step 2.
  278. 5. Follow the instructions on screen.
  279. 6. Start Norton AntiVirus from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  280.    directory and scan a drive to activate the new virus definitions.
  281.    You must run a scan for viruses.  Scanning a drive activates the
  282.    new virus definitions and rebuilds critical files.

  284.

  286. Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and NT Tools
  287. =====================================================================

  290. This product requires the use of Intelligent Updater 1.6, named
  291. 11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE.
  292.  
  293. Users of Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT and Norton NT Tools do
  294. not require anti-virus engine updates at this time.
  295.  
  296. To update Norton AntiVirus 2.0 for Windows NT virus definition files:

  299. 1. Go to (select) the folder or drive where you have the Intelligent
  300.    Updater program (11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE).
  301.    For example, your A: drive.
  302. 2. Double-click (launch) the file 11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE.
  303. 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  304. 4. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.  You must run a scan

  314. with NAV 4.0 for Windows NT.

  316. To update Norton AntiVirus 4.0 for Windows NT virus definition files:

  334. 11AV97EN.EXE or 11DS97EN.EXE.

  336. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare,
  337. version 2.0 is dated earlier than December 13, 1995, you must upgrade
  338. your software before updating the virus definition files.  The new
  339. version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare detects and removes a new
  340. class of viruses called macro viruses.  These viruses infect
  341. Microsoft Word document and template files, and Microsoft Excel
  342. files.  For information on how to receive the upgrade, call Customer
  343. Service at one of the numbers noted at the end of this document.
  344.  
  345. To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definition files:
  346. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  347.  
  348. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  349.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program (11AV97EN.EXE
  350.    or 11DS97EN.EXE).

  358.     Press F3 at the NAVNLM server console screen.
  359. 5. From a DOS prompt, type 11AV97EN.EXE (or 11DS97EN.EXE) [path] and
  360.    press Enter.
  361. 6. [path] is the location mapped in step 2.  Follow the instructions
  362.    on screen.
  363. 7. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.
  364.     Choose ENABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for
  365.     NetWare Windows configuration window.
  366.         or
  367.     Press F2 at the NAVNLM server console screen.

  371. Installing Virus Definition Files Manually
  372. =====================================================================
  373.  
  374. If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus
  375. definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to
  376. extract the virus definition files, then copy the appropriate files
  377. to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  378.  
  379. To install virus definition files manually:
  380. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  381.  
  382. 1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (11AV97EN.EXE, 11DS97EN.EXE, or
  383.    11AI97EN.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder.
  384. 2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command:
  385.  
  386.    11AV97EN.EXE /DUMP
  387.          or
  388.    11DS97EN.EXE /DUMP
  389.          or
  390.    11AI97EN.EXE /DUMP
  391.  
  392.    Virus definition files for all supported platforms are extracted
  393.    into the temporary folder.
  394. 3. Copy the appropriate files to the Norton AntiVirus folder.
  395. 4. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information
  396.    on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.
