  27. The MTU Discovery Working Group is chartered to produce an RFC
  28. defining an official standard for an IP MTU Discovery Option.  ``MTU
  29. Discovery'' is a process whereby an end-host discovers the smallest MTU
  30. along a path over which it is sending datagrams, with the aim of
  31. avoiding fragmentation.

  35.    Oct 89       Encourage the participation of gateway implementors, since the 
  36.                 MTU discovery process affects the design and performance of IP 
  37.                 gateways.

  39.      Done       Unless the proposal in RFC 1063 is acceptable, write a new RFC 
  40.                 describing a different approach.

  42.      Done       Decide if the proposal in RFC 1063 is sufficient, or if there 
  43.                 are flaws to be corrected, or possible improvements to be made.

  47.                 portions of MTU Discovery for popular software (BSD-derived 
  48.                 kernels, primarily).   Encourage rapid implementation by major 
  49.                 gateway vendors, since this option is relatively useless 
  50.                 without widespread support.
