(14 x 10.5 cm) London, Victoria and Albert Museum These three small notebooks were unknown until the mid-19th century, when they surfaced in Vienna. They were acquired by John Forster (1812-76), a noted British essayist and the biographer of Charles Dickens, and are still known by his name. The most significant volume, Forster I (ca. 1487-90), demonstrates Leonardo's fascination with water in its numerous diagrams of hydraulic devices. Forster Il and III (ca. 1495, ca. 1494) concentrate on Euclidean geometry.
