(47 x 36.8 cm) Paris, Louvre MI 753 During a brief trip to Mantua in the winter of 1499-1500, Leonardo made at least two studies of Isabella d'Este, the wife of Duke Francesco Gonzaga. Leonardo drew the marchioness in profile, a format he did not prefer but one considered appropriate to a ruler. In the ensuing years, Isabella implored him to complete a painted portrait of her. Although this drawing has been pricked for transfer to another surface, whether Leonardo began a painted portrait or another artist obliged Isabella by copying the drawing, we do not know. No known painting survives. 2100
