Labels:text | map OCR: Giuliano de' Medici, Leonardo's principal patron in Rome, acquired a parcel of land known as the Pontine marshes in 1515. Located about 30 miles south of the city, the wetlands were transferred to Giuliano by his brother, Pope Leo X, on the condition that he drain the marsh, thereby ridding it of "lethal fevers." Leonardo most likely drew this highly finished map as part of the project. The Pontine Marshes ca. 1515, pen and ink with stylus and black underdrawing, washes 10 7/8 x 15 3/4 in.
