(19.1 x 14.9 cm) Windsor, Royal Library 12551 Surviving studies for the monumental Last Supper allow some insight into the development of the work. A crudely drawn compositional sketch showing the position of each apostle (the handwriting labeling the figures is accepted as Leonardo's) shows that the artist initially intended to place Judas on the near side of the table, isolating him as the apostle who would betray Christ. In the final work, however, Leonardo moved Judas to the far side, where he recoils as Christ declares: "One of you shall betray me."
