Disappearing act: Echidnas, some-
times called spiny anteaters, are
such fast diggers that they can
disappear--like a sinking ship--right
before your eyes. A newly hatched
short-nosed echidna is pea-sized and
stays in its mother's pouch until its
spines develop--about eight weeks.
