STANDARD MICROSYSTEMS CORPORATION
Microsoft Windows NT v3.5 and v3.51 NDIS v3.1 Driver
For Ethernet LAN Adapters
INSTALLATION GUIDE
This software is licensed by SMC for use by its customers only.

This installation guide describes:
o How to use EZStart to copy the Microsoft Windows NT v3.5
and v3.51 NDIS spec 3.1 driver from the SuperDisk to
your PC.
o How to install the driver.
Note: This driver supports all 8216 (Ultra), 80xx (Elite),
80xx (PLUS), and 8416 (EtherEZ) Series ISA,
and Micro Channel Ethernet adapters.
COPYING THE DRIVER FILE USING EZSTART
1. Boot the computer to the DOS prompt.
2. Insert the SuperDisk into a floppy disk drive.
3. Change to the floppy drive where the SuperDisk is installed.
For example, if the disk is in drive A, type "A:" and press Enter.
4. From the DOS prompt, type "EZStart" (or "EZStart /t" for text
mode) and press Enter.
5. Select "Automatic" from the EZStart main screen to perform the
Basic Adapter Test.
6. Select "Save" to save the selected configuration and continue.
7. At the Network Drivers and Documentation Selection screen,
select the appropriate driver you want to install (make sure the
selection you want is highlighted). Then press the Enter key or
select "OK".
8. At the Network Drivers and Documentation screen, the default
destination directory and a list of files to be copied to the
default directory are displayed. To accept the default
destination directory select "Copy Files". Otherwise, enter a
destination directory at the prompt and select "Copy Files".
9. Follow the prompts to continue the installation.
10. Remove the Superdisk from the floppy disk drive.
11. Select "Exit" to exit EZStart.
This completes the driver extraction procedure using EZStart.
MULTIPLE SMC ETHERNET ADAPTERS
If you have more than one SMC adapter in your system, EZStart
will display each adapter with its configuration. Select an
individual adapter by double-clicking on it, or by highlighting it
and either choosing "Select" or pressing the Enter key. The Ezstart
Main screen will appear..
The EZStart default Destination Directory is A:\. Please make
a backup copy of your SuperDisk before EZStart copies files to the
SuperDisk to create an installation diskette.
Note: If you change the Destination Directory, make sure that the
DISK.ID file is in the root directory of the disk that you
are using, and that the OEMSETNT.INF, SMCNCDET.DLL,
SMC8000.DLL, SMC8000.HLP and SMC8000N.SYS files
reside in the root directory or a subdirectory on the disk
you are using.
INSTALLING THE DRIVER
1. Boot your computer from Windows NT.
2. From the Program Manager's "Main" window, double-click on the
"Control Panel" icon.
3. Double-click on "Network". The Network Settings dialog box
appears.
4. Select "Add Adapter".
5. Select "<Other> Requires disk from manufacturer".
6. Select "Continue".
7. When prompted, insert the SuperDisk.
8. Type the Destination Directory where EZStart copied the
driver files (for example, A:\WIN_NT). If you are not
sure where the Destination Directory resides, look for
the SMC8000N.SYS file. This file was one of the files
copied by EZStart to the Destination Directory. When you
find the directory where this file resides, you will have
found the Destination Directory.
9. Select "OK".
10. When the next dialog box appears, select your SMC adapter
type followed by "OK".
11. You will be presented with the Adapter Card Setup dialog box.
NOTE: If you have previously selected the wrong adapter
(step 10) Windows NT will fail to locate the adapter
and you will be presented with default settings.
12. Choose the IRQ Level, Memory Base address, and I/O Base
address. Then, click on OK.
13. When the next two dialog boxes appear, select "OK" for
each one.
14. When prompted, select Restart Now.
NOTE: When performing a Primary Installation (installing
Windows NT for the first time), you will be prompted
with a Network Adapter Card Detection dialog box. Select
Do Not Detect to manually detect the EtherEZ and then
select Continue.
When installing a second adapter and prompted with the
Network Adapter Card Detection dialog box, select
Automatic Detection and then select Continue.
In the unlikely event you encounter any device driver errors
after Windows NT boots, check the event log in the
Administrative Tools icon to see whether the error is related
to your network adapter.
