DRIVER INSTALLATION
o Installing Windows for Workgroups and the SMC Driver
The following procedure describes how to install Windows for
Workgroups v3.11 along with the driver files. This procedure
is designed to expedite the driver installation. For information
on customizing your installation and Windows desktop, refer to
your Windows for Workgroups manual.
NOTE: You may choose to run EZStart (refer to the README.DOC file
on the SuperDisk, or for further detail, refer to the
EZSTART.DOC file found within EZStart) and use its
'Automatic' feature to configure the EtherEZ PnP SMC8416
network card before booting Windows for Workgroups. This
will assure a card configuration that does not conflict
with other devices installed in your PC. You can also check
the correct I/O address of the card for use during the
Windows for Workgroups install procedure.
If you already have Windows for Workgroups installed and only want
to install the SMC driver, proceed to 'Installing the SMC Driver
Only'.
NOTE: Installing the network card prior to installing Windows for
Workgroups may cause Windows for Workgroups to incorrectly
identify the EtherEZ PnP SMC8416 network card as a 'SMC StarCard
Plus' network card. If so:
- Click on 'Networks'
- Click on 'No Windows Support for Networks'
- Click on 'OK' and on 'Continue'
- Follow the prompts and select 'Restart Computer' at the 'Exit
Windows Setup' dialog box
Note: To install an ODI driver, you will need the NETWARE.DRV
file. You can download the current version of this file from
Novell's NetWire Forum on CompuServe.
1. Insert the Windows for Workgroups Disk 1 Setup diskette in your
computer's disk drive.
2. Change to the drive where you inserted the disk in step 1.
Then, at the DOS prompt, type: SETUP
3. Press the Enter key to start the setup procedure. Typically,
this procedure takes from 10 to 15 minutes.
4. Follow the screen prompts until the Network Setup window
appears.
a. Select "Advanced"
b. Select "Networks" and "Install Microsoft Windows Network".
c. Select "No additional network" or "Other", as necessary.
Click on "OK". Refer to your Windows for Workgroups manual
for information.
d. Select "Sharing" and specify whether you want other users to
be able to share your files and printer(s). Then select
"OK".
e. Select "Drivers".
f. Select "Add Adapter". The Add Network Adapter dialog box
appears.
g. Select "Unlisted or Updated Network Adapter" followed by
"OK".
5. When the Install Driver window appears, insert the SuperDisk
into your computer's disk drive.
6. In the Install Driver window, specify the path to the driver
on the SuperDisk (e.g., A:\WFW).
7. Select "OK". The Unlisted or Updated Network Adapter window
appears.
8. Select the appropriate SMC network card (e.g. 'SMC EtherEZ
[SMC 8416x]) you are installing followed by "OK". You will be
prompted to confirm the Base I/O Port setting. Change from the
default (280) to whatever the I/O address of the card is set to
and click 'OK'.
NOTE: You can use EZStart before booting Windows for Workgroups
to verify the correct card configuration. See the note at the
beginning of this section.
9. When the Network Drivers window appears, you can use
"Add Adapter" and/or "Add Protocol" to add more
network cards (up to four) and protocols. Refer to your
Windows for Workgroups manual for more information.
o To change the Base I/O Port and/or driver type, select "Setup"
and make the appropriate selections. (The default selection is
'Real Mode and Enhanced Mode').
o Select "Close" followed by "OK".
o When prompted with the Microsoft Windows Networks Names box,
select "OK".
o Follow the screen prompts to complete the driver installation.
Note: The "Install Driver" window will appear. You will be
prompted to insert the SMC SuperDisk or a disk with the updated
or vendor-provided SMC8000.DOS file. The driver's source path
is A:\ WIN95NT (not A:\WFW).
11. At the end of the installation, you will be prompted whether
you want to accept all the options you selected and restart
your computer or return to DOS. Restart your computer so
your options can take effect.
Some specifics of the installation process may vary according to
each user's needs. Refer to the Microsoft Windows for Workgroups
user manual for more information.
o Installing the SMC Driver Only
The following procedure describes how to install the SMC driver
and assumes that Windows for Workgroups v3.11 is already installed.
NOTE: Installing the network card prior to installing Windows for
Workgroups may cause Windows for Workgroups to incorrectly identify
the EtherEZ PnP SMC8416 network card as a 'SMC StarCard Plus'
network card. If so:
- Click on 'Networks'
- Click on 'No Windows Support for Networks'
- Click on 'OK' and on 'Continue'
- Follow the prompts and select 'Restart Computer' at the 'Exit
Windows Setup' dialog box
1. Double-click on the Network Setup icon in the Network window.
2. When the Network Setup dialog box appears, refer to "Installing
Windows for Workgroups and the SMC Driver", step 4b.
