OVERVIEW
This file explains how to install and load the Novell NetWare 386
v4.x server driver.
SUPPORTED ADAPTERS
o EtherPower Ethernet PCI adapters (8432 board types)
o EtherPower^2 Dual-Channel PCI Ethernet adapters (8434 board types)
o EtherPower 10/100 Fast Ethernet PCI adapters (9332 board types)
PREINSTALLATION HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
Hardware Requirements:
- An IBM-compatible personal computer with 80386 or higher
microprocessor and PCI bus supporting bus master mode.
- An EtherPower, EtherPower^2, OR EtherPower 10/100
PCI adapter for that bus.
Software Requirements:
- Novell NetWare 386 v4.x

ADAPTER INSTALLATION NOTES
Refer to the user guide for complete installation instructions.
When installing an SMC PCI adapter in a PCI computer, make sure
the slot you select supports bus master operations.
o Motherboards with bus master jumpers and interrupt jumpers for
PCI slots:
1. Enable bus master operations to the selected PCI slot using the
appropriate motherboard jumper.
2. Select interrupt to the selected PCI slot using the appropriate
motherboard jumper.
3. Enter the computer's setup menu and:
- Enable bus master on the PCI slot.
- Enable I/O on the PCI slot.
- Define interrupt number on the PCI slot.
o Motherboards with automatic PCI parameterization:
1. No specific setup is needed.
EtherPower 10/100 Users Only:
Ensure that the data rate (10 Mbps [MB10] or 100 Mbps [MB100])
configured for the adapter matches the speed of the hub to which
it is attached.
EtherPower 10/100 B Only:
This adapter supports NWAY (Auto-Negotiation). Setting the
SIA_MODE to AUTOSENSE will allow the driver to automatically
detect the line speed (10 Mbps [MB10] or 100 Mbps [MB100]) and
operate at the highest possible data rate.
The methods used to manually specify the data rate of the adapter
will vary depending on your networking software, the driver
being used, and the hub (or concentrator) you are connecting to.
All SMC drivers for the EtherPower 10/100 B adapter support five
different data rate settings.
AUTOSENSE - when using this default setting, the driver
will automatically detect the line speed of the attached hub
and set the adapter to operate at the highest possible data rate
10 Mbps
Full duplex - adapter operates at 10 Mbps only
10 Mbps
Half duplex - adapter operates at 10 Mbps only
100 Mbps
full duplex - adapter operates at 100 Mbps only
100 Mbps
half duplex - adapter operates at 100 Mbps only
COPYING THE DRIVER FILES
From the Driver Installation screen, select 'Copy Files' to copy all
the files used by this driver from the SuperDisk to the Destination
Directory recommended by EZStart, or to a different directory that
you specify.
LOADING THE DRIVER
Installing the LAN driver is part of the NetWare installation
process. Use the following instructions with those
in the NetWare 386 installation manual to install the driver.
You will need the SuperDisk during this procedure.
1. Refer to the "Load LAN driver module" section in the Novell
NetWare 386 v4.x installation manual for instructions on
installing NetWare.
2. Follow the instructions on starting NetWare and configuring
the server. Use the Load command to load the LAN driver.
If the LAN driver is not located in the default directory,
specify the path to the file on the command line. The
Load command will prompt you for configuration parameters
if they are not supplied on the command line.
The Load command line parameters may be saved in an
AUTOEXEC.NCF file, so they execute automatically every time
the server starts. Refer to the NetWare 386 installation
manual on how to create an AUTOEXEC.NCF file.
3. From the command line on the server, type: LOAD MSM.NLM.
4. Press the Enter key to load MSM.NLM.
5. From the command line on the server, type: LOAD ETHERTSM.NLM.
6. Press the Enter key to load ETHERTSM.NLM.
Note: The following steps are specific to loading SMCPWR.LAN.
For examples, please refer to the SAMPLE.4X demo file on
this diskette.
ETHERPOWER 10/100 USERS ONLY:
Default line speed of the adapter is 100 Mbps. To change the
line speed to 10 Mbps, add the following to the command line
load string:
"LOAD SMCPWR LINE_SPEED=10"
7. If the adapter is installed into PCI slot 17, add the following
command line load string:
"LOAD SMCPWR SLOT=17"
8. At this point, a protocol must be bound to the driver. For example:
BIND IPX TO SMCPWR NET=XX
where xx is the logical network address for the frame type
indicated in your load command.
DRIVER COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS
The only required parameter is the slot number if the adapter is
not installed in slot 3.
Example: load C:SMCPWR SLOT=4<Enter>
ISA/EISA slots for this driver are counted from 1 to 15, PCI slots
for this driver are counted from 3. The first PCI adapter installed
in your computer will be treated as if it is installed in slot 3,
the next one will be in slot 4, and so on.
INSTALLING MULTIPLE ADAPTERS
If you have only one PCI adapter in the server, there is no need to
specify slot number in the LOAD command line. If there is more than
one PCI adapter, the driver will detect it and ask you for a slot
selection, or you can specify slot number in the LOAD command line.
For examples, please refer to the SAMPLE.4X demo file on this
diskette.
TROUBLESHOOTING
If you experience excessive 'Tx FIFO Underflow' or 'Rx FIFO
Overflow' counts in your server Monitor program in the LAN/WAN menu
in your driver custom counters, and you have a PCI computer with
Saturn or Mercury chipset, try using the TURBO keyword when you
load your driver.
Example:
load SMCPWR frame=ethernet_II TP TURBO
Note that some PCI computers may not correctly support 32-bit
protected mode PCI bios calls. To load the driver on these
computers, use the BIOS16 keyword in the driver invocation line.
This will cause the driver to access the computer's BIOS in real
mode fashion.
Note that accessing the PCI BIOS in 32-bit protected mode is the
native mode in 32-bit protected mode operating systems.
ERROR MESSAGES
o 50 - No EISA nor PCI board found in machine!
Driver could not detect a supported adapter.
o 73 - Unable to allocate memory
Driver failed to allocate needed memory from the operating system
(receive/transmit descriptors or needed transmit buffers).
o 200 - Timeout when initializing DecChip 21X4 with setup packet!
Occurs when the PCI slot does not support DMA. Check that BIOS
setup or motherboard switches are set to enable DMA and/or bus
master operation for the slot.
o 210 - Driver failed to locate either EISA or PCI bus!
The computer is not identified as an EISA- or PCI-bus computer.
o 213 - Unexpected OS behavior. Driver supports 3.11 and later
Identifies a failed assumption regarding the operating system
behavior.
o 227 - Internal CRC table corrupted
Driver found an error in internal CRC table.
o 228 - Could not handle chipset bug workaround successfully
Failed to operate chipset bug workaround because PCI BIOS returned
a fail status in one of the calls that operates this mechanism.
o 229 - This machine Host to PCI bridge has a known bug. Driver
limits DC21X4 bursts as a workaround.
This message indicates that your computer does not correctly
support the PCI Local Bus Specification (v2.0). The SMC driver
will work in this environment, but you are urged to contact the
computer manufacturer to determine if your BIOS correctly supports
the features of the PCI Local Bus Specification (v2.0).
o 240 - Unable to locate or read the Ethernet ROM address on board!
Could be caused by corrupt data stored in the IEEE serial ROM.
o 244 - Serial ROM-Read Failed
Driver failed to read the IEEE serial flash ROM due to hardware
handshake failure. Make sure the IEEE flash ROM on your adapter
is operational using EZStart's Basic Adapter Test.
