The 21st CENTURY ALMANAC
Unregistered Version 1.01
Shareware edition, Copyright 1992, Jeff Napier
& Another Company
How To Use The 21st Century Almanac:
Try it. No instruction is necessary! If you get into any
trouble, remember that the [Esc] key will get you out of
almost anything you can get into. Experiment with all the
options on the menu to see everything it can do.
Make sure to experiment with everything on the main menu.
Many of the features have sub-features that you'll not
discover unless you take a peek! Especially note the
DATA KEEPER and CALCULATOR functions, you'll find them very
useful.
If you use a mouse, generally the left mouse button will
select an action (same as pressing [Enter]) or answer a
Yes/No question affirmatively. The right button (same as
[Esc] will abandon an operation and answer questions
negatively.
Advanced Tips:
If you want to export the resulting number from one
conversion or calculation to another, or in and out of the
CALCULATOR, simply enter the new menu area and press the [=]
key.
If you prefer sound effects, select SOUND EFFECTS to turn
the sounds on. If the disk is not write-protected, your
choice of sound effects on or off will be recorded to the
disk and will remain in effect until you change it.
You can change the color options by selecting COLORS from
the menu. Your choices will be saved to disk and will remain
in effect until you change them again.
FILES:
The Almanac can write the results of calculations and
searches to disk in a file called RESULTS. You can turn this
feature on, or change what is written with the RESULTS
function on the main menu.
You can examine this file with any text editor or word
processing program. You can then cut and paste it's
information into your reports, stories, letters, etc. You can
also ignore, delete or rename this file whenever it gets
really big.
If running the Almanac from a floppy disk, you may want to
delete the RESULTS file fairly often, or turn it off, to
maintain disk space.
Once you change SOUND EFFECTS, FILES or COLORS, a file is
created on the disk called 21.CFG. If 21.CFG is deleted, the
Almanac will work fine, but return to default settings.
Normally, the 21st Century Almanac will be able to learn
what drives and directories you use and find it's data files
even if you invoke the almanac while logged to a different
drive or directory. In order for this to work, however, if
you copy the 21st Century files into a sub-directory, that
sub-directory should be specified in the PATH statement in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
Problems:
If the disk which contains the Almanac becomes full, the
program will have difficulties because it needs room in which
to write the RESULTS file.
All files relating to the 21st Century Almanac should be
in the logged drive\directory along with 21.EXE. The
sub-directory containing your almanac files should be
specified in the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
If you have an older version of DOS, make sure your
CONFIG.SYS file has a line like this:
FILES=20
The number can be higher than 20, but without this line DOS
has trouble with many programs, including the 21st Century
Almanac. If you need assistance working with your CONFIG.SYS
file, contact any knowledgeable IBM-compatible enthusiast, or
the store where you purchased your computer.
Windows Friendly:
To install the 21st Century Almanac for Microsoft Windows
version 3.0:
1. Start Windows and highlight the program group in which you
want to install the Almanac.
2. Select NEW from the box in the upper left corner. Select
PROGRAM. When asked for the DESCRIPTION type 21 or Almanac,
or whatever you want to appear under the icon. When asked
for PROGRAM, type the drive and sub-directory into which you
have copied the 21st Century Almanac files, a backslash and
then 21.EXE. For instance:
C:\WINSTUFF\21.EXE
3. Then select CHANGE ICON and type the drive and
sub-directory again, a backslash, then 21.ICO.
4. Select OK and the icon should appear in your selected
program group.
5. To use the Almanac from within Windows, double-click it's
icon. Do not use [Esc] when done with the 21st Century
Almanac running under Windows. Instead hold the [Ctrl] key,
then press [Esc]. This will keep the Almanac loaded for
instant access. Press [Esc] only when done with a Windows
session, unless you want to remove the Alamanc from the
active programs.
Because it is relatively small compared to many other
programs used from within Windows, the 21st Century
Almanac swaps very fast!
NOTES: If you like using a mouse, be sure your mouse driver
is loaded before you start Windows.
Do not use POP21.EXE with Windows.
POP21.EXE
Even though it is a large program relative to the DOS 640k
RAM limit, the 21st Century Almanac can go TSR in many
situations! (A TSR, Terminate & Stay Resident, is a program
which pops up from within other programs, eliminating the
need to quit the first program to use the pop-up.) There are
two limits - you cannot pop it up from within a
graphics-based program, and you cannot pop it up from the DOS
prompt. A hard disk and MS-DOS version 3.0 or later is
required. If you have OVER 2 megabytes of RAM, the almanac
will use it for faster service, assuming your extended RAM is
not already occupied with SMARTDRIVE.SYS or other programs.
To use as a TSR, type POP21 at the DOS prompt, or put the
line: POP21 in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Whenever you need the
almanac, simply hold the [Alt] key and press the [.] key at
the same time.
21.EXE must be accessable from various directories. Put
the directory containing the 21st Century Almanac files in
your PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file or put the
almanac and it's files in an already accessible directory,
such as your root directory.
POP21.EXE is completely independent of 21.EXE, meaning
you can always use 21.EXE without TSR status even if
POP21.EXE is loaded and POP21 makes no changes to 21.EXE.
To get the almanac from the DOS prompt, type 21 and press
[Enter] as usual.
