The periodic table gives us a key to the chemical and physical
properties of each element. It accounts for patterns of behaviour amongst the elements.
We see family groups, such as the |halogens|, whose members react in a similar way, and
we see rows or periods, such as the |first@long@period|, and across these the behaviour
changes gradually. Many chemists had tried to discern these patterns but it was a young
Russian, Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev, who finally saw through the confusion.
