OMEn - the new multi-tasking OS
===============================
There is one difference with this multi-tasking OS. OMEn
(standing for Open Multi-tasking Environment), is a
Shareware release. Yes, it's free! Well, almost... But
because it's Shareware it doesn't automatically mean that
it's crap. No, OMEn is far from it! It's even up to the
standards of Geneva and Mag!x as well as MultiTOS. But how
does it compare?
OMEn is really a completely new operating system. It doesn't
run any TOS or GEM applications; only applications
especially written for it. But this doesn't mean that
there's nothing good about it. Lot's of programs are, and
will, be written for it. There's another brilliant thing
about OMEn as well. It is being written for the PC, Amiga
and Apple Mac. And this means that we will be able to
exchange programs with our Amiga owning friends, PC owning
friends or Apple Mac owning enemies! A program written for
OMEn on the ST will work on the Amiga, ST and Apple Mac.
This means OMEn is very compatible!
When OMEn is in operation, it looks very different to the
GEM desktop we all know and love (semi-love - David) and
takes features from PC's windows, the ST's desktop and the
Amiga's workbench, making it quite easy to use for all new
users. OMEn's desktop appears in a window with its own menu
bar, a bit like GEM. To load files into programs you just
click on a file and drag it to the program; there is no such
thing as a file selector! It's weird, but good.
OMEn is programmed in pure assembler code making it fast and
compatible. There are many new features in OMEn that don't
appear in any other of the multi-tasking operating systems
that make OMEn a good choice. Colour printing is supported
as well as several types of fonts including Postscript type
3.
Although it sounds very good, will OMEn survive? No matter
how brilliant it may be, it needs software to make it work,
and if people don't develop software for it, then kaput,
bam, goodbye; it won't be here very longer.... Wait for a
full review next issue!
