Top 25 Budget Games for the ST
==============================
1. SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND
You all know this one; you play the part of Guybrush in his
quest to become a pirate. It has to be one of the best
graphics adventure games of all time.
2. PARASOL STARS
The sequel to "Rainbow Islands", Parasol Stars is one of the
most famous platform-arcade games ever released onto the
budget market.
3. FUTURE WARS
I'm not sure if this one's still available, but I hope so.
It's another brilliant graphic adventure, like Monkey
Island, where you have to stop aliens from planting bombs on
the earth. If you don't then the earth's in trouble.
4. CRYSTAL KINGDOM DIZZY
It's supposed to be £24.99, but you can get it from Premier
Mail Order for £14.99 so we'll call this budget. It's the
best Dizzy adventure yet, and it may also be the last,
unfortunately. This one sees you finding the stolen treasure
and putting it back in its righteous place. Brilliant and
even more addictive!
5. DIZZY: PRINCE OF THE YOLKFOLK
Yep, our eggy chum's back again. This time Daisy's gone and
pricked (excuse the expression) herself on a mystic spinning
wheel in the same style as Sleeping Beauty (there's a blast
from the past!). Anyway, with the help of some other
characters and some good puzzle solving, you have to save
her from an early grave.
6. SPELLBOUND DIZZY
Over 100 screens of puzzles in this one. Dizzy's back, and
guess what stupid thing he's done now? No? Well, he read a
spell out of Wizard Theodore's book and now he's gone and
whisked all the yolkfolk away to the "underworld". More
puzzle solving and the collecting of stars helps bring them
back....
7. MAGICLAND DIZZY
Flip! These Dizzy games seem to be coming top! In this one,
the Evil Wizard Zaks has gone and turned all of the yolkfolk
into nasty things; Dylan's been turned into a bush, Denzil
into a block of ice, Daisy has been made extra large, Dora's
been made into a frog and a whole lot more. Rescue all the
yolkfolk and then destroy the Evil Wizard Zaks for ever....
8. GRANDAD 2 - IN SEARCH OF THE SANDWICHES
Not exactly a budget game, but it's good enough to be.
Actually, it's good enough to be a commercial title. In this
one, you guide Grandad around the theme park in search of
his sandwiches, you interact with other characters and solve
puzzles in order to find them. A must for all gamers. From
all good PDLs.
9. ANOTHER WORLD
Another brilliant graphic adventure game. Smooth and slick
animation along with brilliant sound effects and gameplay
make this tops! Check out the review in this issue.
10. MIDWINTER 2 - FLAMES OF FREEDOM
We really liked this one. We still do! It's another
adventure game, but in this one several types of game seem
to pop up! It's really weird, but really good.
11. CARRIER COMMAND
This one's a 3D flight sim with brilliant graphics and
sound, not forgetting that important ingredient, gameplay.
Carrier Command is simply one of the best flight sims
around.
12. FANTASY WORLD DIZZY
Just when you thought he'd gone for good, he's back - and
eggier than ever! Daisy's been and got herself locked up
in cloudland and you've got to rescue her. The second Dizzy
adventures sees good puzzles, nice graphics and brilliant
gameplay.
13. GRANDAD AND THE QUEST FOR THE HOLEY VEST
The first in the "Grandad" series. In this one, our smelly
chum has lost his vest and you have to help him find it.
Brilliant graphics and puzzles and overall a wonderful game.
it's Shareware and you need to register it to play all of
it, but it's damn worth it. From all good PDLs.
14. TREASURE ISLAND DIZZY
Not again? Yes - again! The first adventure game on the 16-
bits, although not on the 8-bits. Dizzy's been made to walk
the plank, and you have to help him get off of the treasure
island he's managed to swim to. Not as good as the other
adventures, but still a brilliant game especially as it's
only £4.99!
15. NEW ZEALAND STORY
Oh - the good old days! I remember playing this on my C64.
It's still brilliant even now on my ST. Famous for its
rather rude cheat, this one is one of the best platformers
ever made. You should get this now - it's only £7.99!
16. CRUISE FOR A CORPSE
I should have put this further up the chart, but I forgot
about it. It really deserves fifth place so bear that in
mind. Made by the makers of that brilliant adventure,
Another World, in this one you have to try and solve the
mystery of a murder on board a ship in true Cluedo and
Agatha Christie style. It's very good and features very good
graphics and animation, thanks to Delphine Software.
17. PLOP!
A brilliant Shareware game on the ST, courtesy of Digi
Tallis. It's a sort of board game where you can play against
the computer or against a friend. Very good indeed with some
nice sound effects and good graphics - it's also very
addictive.
18. MIDI MAZE
Another Shareware game which I still play. You can't
complete it, you see, and it's always different. Why?
Because it's a multi-player game where you can link up to 16
STs together. You have to go around a maze trying to find
your opponent and shooting him until he loses a life. There
are loads of power-ups in this one and nothing beats playing
against a human.
19. PRINCE OF PERSIA
Brilliant animation and excellent gameplay make this one of
the best platform-puzzlers ever. The aim of this game is to
find and rescue the princess by solving puzzles and
wandering around rooms.
20. MEGA LO MANIA
"The factory's been destroyed!", "Tower Critical" and "Ha!
No..." are some of the all-famous samples which appeared in
this brilliant god-game, Mega Lo Mania. It's mega addictive,
and if you don't know what it's about, you should do! I'll
never forget Oberon asking "Do you want to come on my
team?"!!!
21. WIZKID
The sequel to that much-loved game, Wizball. This one's a
brightly coloured platform game where you take on the part
of Wizballs son, Wizkid. Wizball, Nifta the cat and Wizard
have all been captured and you have to wander around, trying
to free them.
22. OXYD
Another Shareware game. In this one, you take on the part of
a little black marble who has to unlock all the Oxyds. These
are the things which keep the air supply going. You're
supposed to be inside a computer, and the graphics and sound
on this game are brilliant. You can also play along with a
friend via MIDI or MODEM or NULL MODEM. Wow!!
23. FAST FOOD
Dizzy's back, but this time, not in an adventure. The aim of
this game is to go around a maze, eating all the food to
move onto the next levels. This one has some brilliant
animations and graphics, and there is always a nice, bouncy
tune to hum away to in the background. Good. Very good.
24. RICK DANGEROUS TWO
He's back! In the sequel to RICK DANGEROUS, you have to try
and free yourself from even more mazes. The puzzles are
maddening, and the game is truely addictive. Graphics are
better, too.
25. HEIMDALL
You go around the world on a boat, going from island to
islands in search of three objects. This game is very good,
comes on five disks and has brilliant graphics and sound.
It's an adventure type game with a difference. I'm not too
sure if it's still around, though.
