WRITE ON
========
Everybody owns some sort of word-processor, whether its 1st
Word from the PD or Protext v6 from Arnor, but does it do
the job you want? If not, and you're looking for a new,
maybe better word-processor then check out this review of
Write On. We'll tell you what we think.
Write On is what's known as a graphic word-processor. That
means instead of using your printer's internal fonts and the
ST's boring font (!) it uses it's own and displays them on
screen in a WYSIWYG window. What this means is you get
brilliant quality output, although not as fast as normal
text, even from a nine-pin printer. You can also buy more
fonts to add to your collection and even use clip-art in
your documents thanks to Write On's .IMG importer. But is it
worth the money? Well, in a word YES. Although no where near
as powerful and quick as Protext, it does give a much better
quality output AND can print graphics, and I think the
output is what counts.
A spell checker comes with Write On, and is adequate for
most jobs, and a thesaurus can also be bought if you need
one. It works perfectly well on a one drive system, although
1Mb is the minimum memory or you won't be able to use any of
the fonts, but obviously if you've got a hard drive it's
best to use that. The only time you need to swap a disk is
when you want to save your document.
Write On is GEM compatible which means it's user-friendly,
but not as fast as it could be. Obviously if you own an STE,
the screen redraws will be quicker, but not by much. One
thing I don't like about it is the lack of keyboard short-
cuts when it comes to styling and font selecting. On
Protext, I just have to press ALTERNATE and <B> for bold
type and ALTERNATE and <B> to turn it off again. On Write
On you have to keep on going to the menu. That really got on
my nerves, especially when sometimes it didn't register you
wanted to change the style!
Graphics can be imported, but only in .IMG style. I imported
a 300dpi scanned photo and printed it on my thermal laser
and it came out brilliant, much better than on some other
word-processors. You can resize the picture as much as you
want, although it is best to set the scaling to the
equivalent to your printer if you want the best results.
The normal editing features are there such as search and
replace and cut and paste. No extras are provided which is a
shame. Really, the big plus about Write On is the printout
quality which I have explained. This and the extra fonts
which can be purchased (although quite dear!) are really the
only reason to buy Write On. Sorry, but I have to be
honest....
