- Or ever wondered how to get an everlasting decoder card?.
-
- You do!? Well read on and see how it's done!!
-
-
- Right the following notes and circuits detail how to modify the SKY external
- decoder to disable the re-programming part of the circuit, thus stopping the
- " ZAPPING " of the card that makes it invalid. It should be NOTED that this
- modification will probably also stop the card from being updated ( should they
- ever in their infinite wisdom decide to give us some! ) thus stopping you from
- enjoying another WoW!!! Hold me back! super comedy channel or summatt of that
- ilk!
- Well I'mm sorry to say that at this moment in time I can't even garantee
- that the modification actually works ( because our Electronics Wiz is rippin
- my decoder apart even as I type this out. I have been assured by a bit of a
- Boffin ( who just happened to be Technical Manager of Amstrad Tee! Hee!) that
- it does work and I sensed a little bit of bitterness in his voice as he spoke
- of his time with Mr Sugar's Empire. So in theory if you have a valid SKY Movies
- Plus or Movie/Sport channels card then it should stop valid just as long as SKY
- don't issue a whole set of new cards to subscribers or issue an unknown command
- to the decoder.
-
- Study the Circuit Diagram 1,( which you'll find on the desktop SKY_CIR1.PI2 )
- this shows what you have to do to disable the re-programming part of the
- decoder. It involves isolating pins 38, 37, 36, and 35 of the 8252
- microprocessor and connecting a zenner diode from J108 to earth/GND. You also
- need to solder together a number of components you lift clear of the board and
- then connect a new 5 volt feed to them.
-
- Start by taking apart the decoder, turn the front towards you and look at the
- bottom left hand side, near to the power supply heat sink. You should then be
- able to locate the components shown in the diagram. You first need to lift clear
- RP15, DP24, DP25 and DP27 ; RP15 is a resistor, the rest are diodes. You can
- either cut the components clear automatically isolates the required pins of the
- 8252 I.C.
-
- If you decide to de-solder the components then you will need to remove the
- main P.C.B. ( Printed Circuit Board ..Ok! MENTOR? ) from the case. This is done
- by removing all the screws, about eight in all, then lifting the board clear of
- the case. You will also need to remove the earthing screen from under the board
- by simply de-soldering the two wires holding it in place.
- Next, solder together the lifted ends of the components and connect the
- positive side of an IN4001 diode; the other side of the diode is taken to
- +5 volt supply at J130. The IN4001 helps protect the 5v line as this connects to
- most of the decoders I.C.'s.
-
- The next part of the modification involves connecting a 15 volt zenner diode
- from J108 to earth. The current flowing into the zenner needs to be limited, so
- you need to replace link J108 with a 1 Watt 47 resistor. This does have the
- effect of cooling down the diode, but you will need a fairly large zenner, try
- a metal can 10 Watt type. If you can't get hold of a 15 volt diode, you could
- fit a 16 volt zenner instead but don't use anything higher than 16 volts. The
- negative end of the zenner connects to ground and a convenient point is link
- J120. That's it all you need to do now is put together your decoder and check if
- it still works. ( and I will MENTOR OK!? )

- ~~~~~~~~~
- Please NOTE that the details given in this document are for reference and
- experimentation only ( Honest Guv! ) and by the way guys you could probably be
- breakin the 'Lilly' LAW ( see the postcard for that one JAM )if you watch any
- subscription channel, including Filmnet, RTL etc, without first paying the
- correct fees. You do this modification at your own risk, and no way can We,Me,
- Us, Aunty Flo, Uncle Tom, Cousin Billy or John Major (well perhaps Hmmmn!) be
- held responsible for the failure of any decoder or card.
-
- The other PI2 Pictures that accompany this document ( try CIRCUIT.SKY folder )
- show the modification for the SKY decoder; NOTE Circuit 2 is for the internal
- This modification was supplied by someone who has had this modification done
- himself ( support your Local Technical Dept of Amstrad folks! ) who used a 05
- card for months without paying any subscriptions. ( SKY_CIR2.PI2 )
-
- If you can't get hold of high Wattage zenner diodes then you could use Circuit
- Diagram 3 once again you'll find it in the folder as SKY_CIR3.PI2
-
-
-
-
- Ok! before I end this for God's sake don't mess about with the decoder if you
- don't own it ( I mean if you only rent the equipment ) or you could end up
- watching free Movies in one of H. M. P's retirement homes ( Prison you prawn!)
- Right that's it
- I'm outta here
- happy viewing.
