  10. I have learnt alot about TOS in the years that I have had my ST so 
  11.   
  12. now  I share the imformation I know with you.   All the  questions 
  13.   
  14. that are asked the most,  I have answered so enjoy and I hope  you

  20. ~~ WHAT DOES TOS STAND FOR? ~~

  25. ~~ WHAT DOES TOS DO? ~~
  26.  
  27. TOS controls just about all of the main controls on your  computer 
  28.   
  29. such as your disk drive,  mouse input and output, keyboard and add 
  30.   
  31. ons  such  as  printers and modems.   It also  controls  our  main 
  32.   
  33. entrance into the computer - The Desktop.

  36. ~~ HOW DOES TOS GET IN OUR COMPUTER? ~~
  37.  
  38. When the ST first came out,  the only way you could get TOS was by 
  39.   
  40. inserting a disk with TOS on everytime you booted up. 
  41.  
  42. Now  TOS is stored in a Read Only Memory,  or ROM as it is  better 
  43.   
  44. known.   The  only problem with the TOS being in ROM and not on  a 
  45.   
  46. disk is that it is hard to update it although TOS has been updated 
  47.   
  48. several times!

  51. ~~ WHEN DID TOS FIRST APPEAR? ~~
  52.  
  53. TOS was launched in 1985.
  54.

  56. ~~ HOW MANY DIFFERENT KINDS OF TOS ARE THERE? ~~
  57.  
  58. There are 8 different kinds of TOS.
  59.  
  60. TOS 1.00, TOS 1.02, TOS 1.04 or 1.4, TOS 1.06, TOS 2.05, TOS 2.06, 
  61.   
  62. TOS 3.XX and MULTITOS.

  64.  
  65. ~~ WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF TOS? ~~

  67. TOS 1.00
  68.  
  69. This was the very orginal TOS.   It had millions of bugs and  most 
  70.   
  71. programs  did not work with it and the ones that did  were  always 
  72.   
  73. crashing.   It also had the 40 folder problem where if you  opened 
  74.   
  75. more  than 40 folders then the computer would crash and you  would 
  76.   
  77. lose all of your work.   Not a very good TOS really!   If you have 
  78.   
  79. TOS 1.00,  you can get a program called "FOLDERXXX" which will fix 
  80.   
  81. the  40 folder problem but you should still think about  upgrading 
  82.   
  83. to a higher TOS.

  86. TOS 1.02
  87.  
  88. This  was firstly only put in the Mega ST so that it could have  a 
  89.   
  90. blitter chip but then later it was introduced onto all  ST's.   It 
  91.   
  92. is slightly better than TOS 1.00 but still has many bugs in it and 
  93.   
  94. it still might be wise to upgrade a bit higher.

  97. TOS 1.04 or 1.4
  98.  
  99. This  was  the  first really good TOS,  it  made  everything  much 
  100.   
  101. faster,  even  without a blitter chip and disk access was  greatly 
  102.   
  103. improved.   Nearly  all of the bugs had been removed and  genrally 
  104.   
  105. this is a good TOS to have.   Anything lower should be upgraded to 
  106.   
  107. this or higher.

  110. TOS 1.06
  111.  
  112. This  was  the TOS used on STE's so it could cope with  the  extra 
  113.   
  114. colours  and speed but this was later updated to TOS 1.62  as  TOS 
  115.   
  116. 1.06 would not let you boot up in medium resolution.

  118.  
  119. TOS 2.05
  120.  
  121. This  was  designed  for the Mega STE and  offers  a  much  better 
  122.   
  123. desktop and some extra commands.
  124.

  126. TOS 2.06
  127.  
  128. This is what all new STE's have in them at the moment.  It is just 
  129.   
  130. TOS  2.05 with some bugs taken out really but also does  a  memory 
  131.   
  132. test everytime you boot up.

  135. TOS 3.XX
  136.  
  137. This is the TOS for use with the TT only.

  140. MULTITOS
  141.  
  142. This is still being developed and will be put into the new Falcon.  
  143.   
  144. It allows you to run more than 1 program at the same time.

  148. ~~ HOW DO I KNOW WHAT TOS I HAVE ~~
  149.  
  150. If you send me a blank disk and return postage,  I will copy you a 
  151.   
  152. program that tells you what TOS you have.   Remember to include an 
  153.   
  154. article or P.D. or something if you can!
