British Steel Race
Around The World
~~~~ BRITISH STEEL CHALLENGE ~~~~
=================================
~~ WHAT IS THE BRITISH STEEL CHALLENGE? ~~
The British Steel Challenge is a yacht race which goes all the way
around the world......THE WRONG WAY! The race started in
September 1992 in South Hampton. From there they sail all around
the world in a 60 foot yacht made out of British Steel.
It cost the entrants £15,000 to enter the yacht race and some of
them hadn't even sailed before. People from all kinds of jobs
applied from vets to financial advisers (My Uncle). There are 10
yachts all identical aprt from appearance. My Uncle is on one of
the yachts named, "INTERSPRAY". This race is a once in a life
time and has never been done before. I will be interviewing my
Uncle in one of POWER'S issues when he returns. Meanwhile he
doesn't know that I borrowed his laser printer to review and I
have now left it in peices! (See Printer Reviews!) Each yacht as
a crew of 14 people (140 people in total.) and each person is only
entitled to 2 small crates of what ever he or she wants.
The race is about 28,000 miles long but there are stops ever 8000
miles or so.
So far the stops have been in Hobart and Rio and the next stop
will be in Capetown I think.
Many problems have occured on all the boats producing real
problems, one even lost it's mast as the remains of Hurrican
Andrew came from America.
The yachts also have to make it through Cape Horn - One of the
most dangerous places in the sea. It is a thin entrance where all
the seas tides meet together producing pyramid shaped waves upto
50ft. This is hard enough, but going the wrong way is twice as
hard and this is how Captain Cook lost his boat.
All the yachts have motors but they are not allowed to use them
apart from getting in out of harbour and even then they are only
aloud to use the engine for up to 2 miles. To make sure the
engines aren't used, mileage is noted at each stop.
It is a real challenge and if you are intrested in this you can
keep updated by reading Teletext on BBC 2, page 379.
I think Interspray (My Uncles Boat) are about 8th at the moment
and I think Commercial Union is winning. Interspray were winning
all the way in the 1st leg but ended up in 2nd place at the end of
the leg, since then they have lost it and have been hanging around
the 8th and 9th place.
Oh well, Good Luck Interspray!
I will give more imfo on this in the next issue and as I said I
will interview my Uncle when he returns (if he'll speak to me
after seeing his laser printer!)
