THE 1966 WORLD CUP DEMO
REVIEWED BY JAMES L. MATHEWS
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
POWER P.D. : PRESENTLY UNCATALOGUED
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Whether you're one of the greatest football fans ever, or someone with a
prejudice against footballers, you will ALL know about the 1966
world cup...The year in which England beat Germany in the finals and went
onto become the WORLD CUP WINNERS OF 1966!!! It was a glory held for four
years and since then, things have gone slightly down hill.
You may remember the day from books or video's or you may have even been
there or seen it live on T.V....It must have been a glorious day (providing
you supported England!). Many of us are too young to have any memory of it
though...With football becoming ever more popular with the youth of today,
people want to remember this day...The problem is that many are simply too
young to do so.
This is where this demo comes in. It's from Martin Cubitt and features 5
disks worth of sampled speech and digitised graphics all put together in
the attempt to capture the atmosphere of that great day once more.
The demo works on all ST's of any memory configuration, but the more memory
you have, the better as it means that the running of the demo will be much
faster.
It's all well presented with even a nice little intro at the beginning and
this is a great way to watch the victorious 1966 world cup. It even has
the National Anthem at the end of the demo. The demo can be a bit annoying
with the constant loading although as I said, with a bigger memory, this
improves.
The sequences are based on highlights of the game such as the goals and
each part repeats twice just so that you don't miss anything or so you can
have another look at those wonderful goals. A bit more control over it
such as replay or even slow motion would have been nice but the format as
it is is quite satisfactory.
At the moment, this is not catalogued in POWER P.D. so simply ask for the
1966 WORLD CUP DEMO enclosing 5 disks and an S.S.A.E. (2 first class stamps
on the package SHOULD be enough) and I will send a copy straight back to
you.
Some may argue the point that you might as well watch it on video instead
but for those who want to make use of the ST or those that can't afford the
video or don't know where to get it, this is well worth it and it's also a
nice thing to show your mates when they come round.
POWERFUL
--------
Well presented.
Best parts of the game included.
Repeats twice incase you miss anything.
Good quality sampled speech.
Makes use of second drives.
Makes use of extra memory.
POWERLESS
---------
Bit slow on small memory machines.
Taking up five disks for one demo is quite a lot.
POWER RATING : 80%
POWER COMMENT :
"This is well worth a look, especially if you're a football fan!"
