Before I left POWER a month of two ago for my Mark Hitch impression (i.e.
Leaving the country!), I bought a new disk drive...I forgot all about
reviewing it though until I was reading POWER a few days ago so now, I'm
going to review my new external disk drive, The Cumana CSA354.
I have had around 15-20 external disk drives now and still have about 7 of
them so I am very experienced in the disk drive life. The Cumana cost me
60 quid and is a normal, double density, 720k disk drive for all ST's and
the TT as well.
This drive is quite a well known one and has been praised quite a lot which
is why I bought it. It looks like most other drives, roughly the same size
and shape and it has a metal shell which seems quite durable.
As we all know, looks aren't everything and just because it hasn't got
pink, Mr. Blobby poker dots all over it with flames going up the side
doesn't mean it's not a good drive.
The drive is very reliable and unlike some other disk drives I've had,
don't get hotter than the blokes at the Playboy Mansion! It stays nice and
cool and although is noiser than some other drives, that is cancelled out
with the fact that it has an internal PSU with a really nice, long mains
lead so that you don't have to restrict yourself to where you put your
disk drive. It's an all too common problem to have a disk drive that you
want on the other side of your desk but can't put it there because the lead
isn't long enough. No problems like that with THIS drive!
The drive is very fast when it comes to RPM and it is very noticable.
Also, with most drives, you may have problems reading upto track 82 but
with this disk drive, not only can you read track 82, but 83 and 84 as
well!
This drive is easily one of the best I've had. At 60 quid, it is slightly
more than some other disk drives but it's well worth it and if you're
shelling out £50-£55 for a disk drive, you might as well spend another 5 or
ten pounds to get this drive because for that little extra, you get much
more.
As I said, it is quite a noisy drive, but if you can handle that, it's well
worth getting, especially if extended formats are a regular for you because
I don't think that I've ever encountered a drive that can easily handle 84
tracks without any problems.
POWERFUL:
Durable
Simple
Fast (nearly 305 rpm!)
Can read to track 84!
Internal PSU
POWERLESS:
Slightly louder than other drives.
RATING:91%
COMMENT:If you drive a lot, drive with this one!
