MURDER ON THE ORION EXPRESS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An Organised Chaos Licenseware Game Review
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By Ryan Simpson
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I never used to play grahical adventure games or text adventures before.
This can be described as a bit of both or neither. It is a comedy - muder
mystery set in space - a mixture between Cluedo and Red Dwarf. In fact, the
author, Kev Davies, even says in the doc that this is what inspired him to
make the game. The actual game costs a mere 3 quid and can be obtained from
most P.D. libraries. Anyway, on with the review...
When you boot up the disk, you get a nice intro showing the Orion Express
(a black space craft) flying through space and a scoller type thing at
the bottom. You hit the space bar and you get the desktop, where you can
either load the game or read the read me file. The first time I didn't
bother to read the text and was completely lost, but after you read it, it
turns out to be a very simple game to play. The read me file consists of
three parts - the first is a 35k long story (and a very good one at that!)
which tells you the story behind the game. It introduces the
charactures (mighty strange they are too!). It really helps if you read
most of this. The second part is the instructions. The game is mouse
controlled. The third option lets you view any other file on the disk,
they are all viewed with the excellent 'Pandamoniom Doc Displayer'.
Once all that is over with, you can quit and play the game. When you first
load the game you get a good intro screen, hit any key and you get the
game playing area. There is lots of fun things that are just there for a
laugh. For example, there is an electric plug in the top left corner. When
you press the button on it, the small scroller screen to the right, displays
a few messages - 'plugs for Organised Chaos - a bloody good idea.' In the
middle you have a map of the ship that you can go about, when you move, the
scroller tells you what all the other characters do. At the bottom,
there are three boxes containing the faces of all the ships crew and
passengers. You scroll along with arrows at each side. You click the right
mouse button on them and you get a selection screen from which you can
question the suspects. All the characters have little novelties, for
example, some have stupid accents - 'Mornang. What cen I de you fer ?' is
actually them trying to ask you 'Morning, What can I do for you'. This of
course confuses you a bit and it's also quite funny at times.
The charcters are :
Ben : Paranoic security guard
Spleen : Medical Droid and part time bar man
Relf : Ships engineer and ex convict
Mike Socket : Comms office
Dez Hertz : Waiter
RS232 : Programming
Eddie : Invisible man that can only be seen by droids
Pyro : A talking pet toaster (taken from Red Dwarf character)
There is another 10 or 12 characters but I don't want to spoil the
game and tell you them all. Also on the scrren is a few other bits - there
is a T.V. that shows the BBC2 symbol, then goes fuzzy, then the Channel 4
symbol and various other T.V. pictures, quite funny to watch. If you click
on it, it gives a very detailed description of all the characters. There is
also a small button, but I'll let you find that one out for yourself !!
Well, you only have three guesses at who the murderer is. When you are
questioning them you can say 'You're the murderer!' or 'You're nicked!' and the
like. The last few questions all change each time. There are things like
- 'Stoney Bridge', 'Boil yer cat !' or 'I'm a lumberjack and I'm Okay' and
'Satan is your lord and master !'. These change each time you play. Also,
the murderer is a different person each time and it is a different person
that gets killed with a different weapon (some people have been killed
with things like kettles, meat cleavers and even a four course meal !!).
I've now probably told you nearly everything about this game so I'd
better finish this review off. Cheerio !
POWERFUL
~~~~~~~~
Hilarious, very funny.
Different each time you play.
Not a bug to be seen (and I don't mean spiders !).
Nice little novelty items to play with while you play.
Good documentation.
Cheap.
POWERLESS
~~~~~~~~~
No music (although you can do this yourself very easily).
Conclusion : This isn't a massive, serious murder game like Cruise for a
Corpse, what it is, is a very funny comedy game with a lot of cluedo and
quite a bit of Red Dwarf mixed in for good luck. And for 3 quid you can't
go far wrong.
